"Can I ask you something?" Todd started, shifting in the passenger seat so that he was facing me.
It was Tuesday, and Todd and I's weekly ritual was to sit in one of our cars in some parking lot, eating and talking. We found that both of our guardians were too nosy to have a genuine conversation in either of our houses, so we improvised. I also found that Tuesday was the night David wanted to talk to me most; he almost always facetimed me and then claimed he forgot I was hanging out with Todd. I was sure he was just trying to keep a careful eye on us, as if I'd ever do anything like that to him.
"Duh."
"Do your grandparents know you sleep over at David's all the time?"
I had no clue where the question came from, but I answered, "First of all, I sleep at his house maybe twice a week. It's not like I'm there all the time. But... no. I think they think I'm still a virgin. Not that we do that every time I sleep over, but you know how old people are. They either assume the worst, or they're very naive."
"Would they be mad if they knew?" he wondered, and I thought for a second.
"I don't know," I answered honestly. "They got married really young. I like to think that they see me and David like that, young and in love. I mean, they probably know I'm at his house all the time... I just don't tell them myself."
"So you and David are really getting married, huh?" he shifted so he wasn't looking at me anymore, his spoon digging into the almost emptied, almost melted half gallon of cookies and cream icecream we had picked up from Walmart earlier.
"Maybe," I shrugged indifferently in response. "It's so weird to think about. I don't know, I'm still not totally convinced on the whole Talulah legacy thing, but then David tells me he loves me and I'm ready to walk down the aisle right now."
"What if it doesn't work out?"
It was a question I asked myself often.
"It probably won't," I replied honestly. "We're young. David will probably break my heart at some point. I will probably break his when I start to push him away because everyone I've ever loved has hurt me in the end. One of us will probably die in some freak accident just because it would make sense for us."
"Hey," Todd warned, sending me a glare. "That's not even funny."
"I'm not trying to be funny," I shrugged. "I'm the most unlucky person in the world."
"You're morbid."
"I'm well aware," I replied, digging out the last scoop of ice cream. I felt gross putting the last bite in my mouth, but I reminded myself that I had already eaten half the container. There was no reason to feel gross now. "Where are you thinking about for college? Don't you want, like, an English degree?"
"Yeah," Todd nodded, luckily accepting my change in topic. "I don't know. Maybe Georgetown. Not an Ivy, for sure, but... something up there. We went to DC when I was little, and I really liked it there. You still want Harvard?"
"Yeah," I replied with a sigh, settling into my seat. "I'm thinking applied mathematics. I want to work for NASA."
"God, you can take the girl out of Houston, but you can't take Houston out of the girl," Todd laughed. "You wanna be an astronaut, Lisa?"
"No. I want to build the rockets," I smirked, dropping my spoon into the empty container and then shutting the lid.
"Does it ever tire you being a closet genius hanging out with idiots like David?" Todd asked, a slightly bitter tone taking over his voice. "What'd you get on the SAT again? 1500?"
"Put some respect on my name, bitch," I ordered with a chuckle. "You and I both know it was a 1520."
"If NASA doesn't want you, I'm sure some fucking Martian will take you to make some UFOs for them. They probably pay in moon rocks."
"The only aliens I'd work with are aliens from Venus, the superior planet of the solar system," I reminded him. "I'd maybe make exceptions for Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. Well, fuck, that's like half of them. I love planets, okay!"
"What about Uranus?"
"What about your mom's anus?" I countered his childish joke with one of my own, which only made him beam with pride. Pressing the button to start the engine, I asked, "Are you ready to go?"
I called David as soon as I got home to assure him that I was safe and fine. He was always very worried after a day with Todd, constantly asking what we did and where we went and what we talked about. I honestly didn't know what his problem was. He hung out with Gabbie one on one all the time, and I never had any inkling of suspicion. I accepted that they were friends. He just couldn't do that with Todd and I. Boys.
After our phone call where I shared some basic details of the night (AKA told David ever single conversation topic that came up, including Todd's crazy aunt Sheila and my longing to shave my head), I took a shower to cleanse myself of the gross feeling I had after eating a fourth of a gallon of ice cream.
Since I had just purchased The Andy Griffith Show box set for my grandpa for his birthday, we were having viewing parties every night. We were officially on the episode where Andy lies about some old cannon so he can sell it. It was a pretty boring show, but they both seemed to love it, so I watched along with them and tried to stay off my phone to show I cared.
We watched a few more episodes, each seeming stupider than the last, before I decided to retire for the night, realizing that I had to wake up early the next morning since David and I were meeting at the Sunrise cafe for breakfast.
I brushed my hair and my teeth for the night and then settled into bed, checking my phone one last time before I went to sleep.
