the dobriknator: Good morning princess

the dobriknator: Or should I say queen

the dobriknator: Get it???

the dobriknator: Bc ur about to win prom queen ??

me: yeah genius i got it

I giggled at David finding it necessary to explain his shitty but easy to grasp joke, causing Corinna to look up at me. "You're going to crease your makeup."

"Sorry, jeez," I laughed again, trying to set my face to stone so one of the makeup artists Corinna hired could continue her work. I stated repeatedly that I wouldn't be able to pay for someone else to do my makeup and I would be fine on my own, but she insisted that I get mine done with her and Gabbie. "I'm like Medusa. Made of stone."

"Medusa wasn't made of stone," Gabbie cracked up from the side of the room, where she was straightening her short hair. Her makeup was already finished, her face neatly chiseled with a dark smoky eye to pop with her navy blue dress. It was almost two in the afternoon, so I wasn't exactly sure why David had just woken up, but everything else was running according to schedule. "She turned people into stone."

"Yeah, same difference," I shrugged, stopping my talking while Gracie, the makeup artist, blotted some red lipstick onto my lips.

"I literally can't breathe right now," Corinna smiled excitedly. "Our bestie is gonna be prom queen!"

"I don't know," I laughed. "David will probably win, but I won't. It's just... not likely. That'd be embarrassing though, huh? My boyfriend dancing with the prom queen while I stand off to the side."

"We appreciate the humility, but we all know you're going to win."

"I don't want to get my hopes up," I admitted after Gabbie's strong stare. "I don't want to expect such a magical night, and then everything go to shit. Like, what if we don't win? What if this whole Talulah thing is a bunch of bullshit, and we don't win, and then David is convinced I'm not the one so he dumps me in a heart beat like he did with everyone else?"

"The difference between everyone else and you is that you're Mona fucking Greene," Corinna explained. "I used to be the hot girl of Abernathy, but not anymore! You literally have the hottest body, the prettiest face, and the best personality at Abernathy. I know you don't read Snitches, but all anyone ever talks about is how they love you and how hot you are and how they wish David would just dump you already so they can tap that. David isn't going to dump you because he loves you and he sees a future with you."

"You've kind of gotten rid of the idea that he has to conform to his family's ideas anyways," Gabbie added. "I mean, David was obsessed with finding the perfect girl that his dad would approve of, but if tomorrow John said you weren't the one, David wouldn't listen. You are literally the best thing that's ever happened to him. All he talks about is you. He's different when you're not around. You changed his life."

"We're in high school," I deadpanned. "I've hardly done anything."

"High school isn't just high school for the Dobriks, though," Corinna pointed out with a raised eyebrow. I didn't tell her she was creasing her makeup. "David is going to get into Harvard because he's John Dobrik's son, he's going to get a meaningless business degree, and then he's going to take over SeatGeek while Sam becomes SeatGeek's new lawyer. It's set in stone. High school is basically the end."

I didn't respond. It was honestly not worth fighting about the fact that everything wasn't set in stone and your life can change in the blink of an eye. They would never understand like I would anyway.

Once Gracie had applied the finishing touches to my makeup (setting spray and an unhealthy but gorgeous amount of highlight), I finally felt like I could breathe. My hair was resting in some loose waves down my back, ready to be tossed over my shoulder and blown in the wind. My acrylics were on (plain black) and still in perfect condition, despite the fact that I'd had them for three days, and usually I would've ripped them off by now. My tan was faint, but no longer streaky or patchy. My dress was hanging on the back of Corinna's bathroom door, and my shoes (a gorgeous pair of red suede Louboutins that David gifted me even after I repeatedly told him no) were set against the wall next to it. The Dream that Corinna had postmated was set to arrive any minute. Everything was going according to plan for once in my life.

"Mona, get your ass over here before Gabbie starts eating your fries."

"Hey!" Gabbie whined in response. "I just wanted one!"

"Yeah, well, it's not Mona's fault that you ordered a salad from the place with the best cheese fries in the world."

"My dress is tight! I don't want to be bloated!" Gabbie defended herself, grazing her fork across the top of her salad instead of actually eating it.

"You can have some if I don't finish," I informed her with a smile, glancing down at my vibrating phone to see that Todd was calling me. "Sup, bitch?"

"I'm about to meet Alex and Scott and David for lunch before we get ready. Just calling to see how it's going over there."

"Uh," I looked around at the three of us eating on the floor, fully glam, with a laugh. "It's good over here. We're, like, basically ready already. We're just eating very carefully now."

"Oh, what'd you guys get?" he asked.

"The Dream," I answered with a smile, glancing down at my warm french fries dripping with cheese sauce. "Corinna got chicken fingers and a milkshake, I got cheese fries, and Gabbie got a salad. Where are you guys going?"

"Portillo's, but you're making me wish we weren't," he laughed. "Okay, just making sure you were alive and well. I'll see you at, like, four, yeah?"

"Is the bus taking us to the country club, or are we getting on it from the restaurant?"

It wouldn't be a high school prom without a delinquent party bus.

"The restaurant. We'll pick you guys up from Corinna's, I think," Todd explained. "Save me a dance tonight, okay?"

"Yeah, of course," I replied. "See you later. Make sure you have enough time to get ready! I know you guys are just putting on suits, but you're making me nervous."

"Okay, Mom... bye!"

I hung up the phone with a sigh, happy to return to my plate of cheese fries instead of worrying about how much time the boys had to get ready.
