Grillby

Crack!

Oh, that sound. That resounding echo that still resides within my mind.

I turned to see Gaster falling to the ground, the human who'd attacked him running away. In fact... the humans were retreating. But that didn't matter. What mattered was that Gaster was okay.

I ran to him, grabbing his shoulders and turning him toward me. What I saw will never leave me. It's still burned into the back of my mind, taunting and torturing me. If I'd been with him...

His already bad eye had a slice directly through it from a sword. The crack in his skull traveled from slightly below his eye socket to the back of his head. Hairline fractures surrounded it from the sheer force of the blow.

I was sure he was dead. I was sure he'd turn to dust in my arms.

"Grillby...?" A shaky voice. A shaky question.

I looked at him. Those few seconds remain with me as well. I can still see his face shift from dazed to a sad smile, then to an expression of pure pain and suffering.

"I-It hurts, Grillby..."

"I know." I picked him up, running toward one of the few medical tents that had survived the chaotic battle. I stumbled toward it. The monsters working there quickly took him in. Their expressions also remain in my mind. Doubt. Despair. A belief that they would not be able to save him.

I slumped to the ground outside the tent, magma building up in my eyes. I couldn't lose the only thing that mattered.
