if you hadn't noticed already, the song is 'come what may' from moulin rouge

Tony offered to let Steve stay with him in Avengers Tower but Steve declined. He wanted his own apartment, a chance to move on from everything that happened.

Tony agreed and Steve found a cute little apartment with the Avengers Tower in view.

He and Tony didn't get off on the right foot. Tensions were already high and then he and Tony got into a shouting match. Suffice to say, they quickly had to get over themselves and keep them and a whole helicarrier from crashing. It was so far from love at first sight.

More like love at first near death experience.

It was during shawarma, actually. Natasha and Clint were in their own little world, murmuring about SHIELD and other classified business. Thor was focused on his shawarma and Bruce was half asleep. Everyone always assumed that Tony made the first move, but it was Steve.

Granted, it was only as an olive branch to apologize, but that one date turned into two which turned into ten.

Tony liked showing up at Steve's apartment with lunch and the two would sit in Steve's window seat, looking out at the city. That's where Tony proposed. He knew Steve hated making a scene, so he came over and made them a nice dinner and they sat and ate and during dessert and then Tony dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring.

For a time it was perfect. Tony started staying over at Steve's apartment all the time. They would watch movies together and Tony would fall asleep on Steve and it felt straight out one of the romcoms that Clint made them all watch.

But of course, anything perfect can't last.

Tony started to pull away. He started getting paranoid about safety and would spend all day and most of the night at his lab and he would come home sleep deprived and irritated. Steve tried, he tried so many times to talk to Tony, to reassure him and let him know that the people who love and care about him were still there.

Steve got angry. He missed Tony, he missed the way they used to be, with spontaneous dates and their banter as they did chores and went on missions. He missed them. So he snapped back. He told Tony that he had to get his act together or Steve was leaving him.

Tony got angrier. Said that this was the mess that Steve married and he should've known what he was getting into. Tony left and slammed the door behind him and Steve sank to the floor, tears streaming down his face. He didn't mean it. He loved Tony, mess and all.

Steve thought Tony wasn't coming back. He thought they were done.

But Tony came back, his face red with tears streaking down his face. He dropped to his knees in front of where Steve was sitting and grabbed his hands.

come what may

"I didn't mean it. Tony, I'm so sorry." Steve said, clutching Tony's hands like it's his lifeline.

"I know, I know. I haven't been great. I just- I don't want to lose you. I don't want to lose anyone. I can't."

"We won't. Tony, we won't." Steve said, pressing his forehead to Tony's. "I love you."

"I love you too."

"Stevie, you alright?" Tony asks, coming up to Steve and wrapping his arms around his waist and pressing a kiss to his cheek.

"Yeah, just thinking about us. And how much I love you." Steve says.

"Aww, you sap." Tony says.
