Chapter Eight

Phyllis stared at Janet in disbelief. She’d never had a family member talk back to her like this.

“How dare you!” she shrieked, and started storming towards Janet.

In the split second before Phyllis would reach her, the thought came to Janet, about how this was just like they were little girls again, and Phyllis would hit her, if she didn’t get her way. But at the same time, it was curiously amusing to see the grown up, middle-aged Phyllis approaching her in the same way, as if she were play acting a role from their childhood.

Her awareness shifted back to the present, just as Phyllis was raising her fist, and Janet flinched at the expected pain. But a look of astonishment came over Phyllis, and she froze in place.

Janet was just as astonished, or even more astonished, because she could see what Phyllis couldn’t, that a row of red scratch marks appeared across her sister’s face, and their combined width was suspiciously about the same as a cat’s paw.
