I walk into yet another boring day at school. I take a seat in my first period. dreading the class already, even though it hasn't started yet. The teacher walks in, followed by Luke who takes his seat next to me. I look over at him and smile, I thought maybe he forgot about what happened yesterday and we were cool. He looks back at me, his face emotionless as he flips me off, and looks back ahead. Okay cool, I didn't want to be nice anyways.
The teacher starts calling out names in pairs, confused I raise my hand. "Mrs. Jude, why are we being paired ?" I shout amongst the noise in the classroom.
"Because this is your senior project. It has to be completed in order for you to graduate Blair" she rolls her eyes and continues to call out names. As she nears the end of the list I get paired with this girl named Peyton. I look around me and I see her waving in my direction, signaling me to join her at her desk. I smile and introduce myself as we shake hands.
"Hey I know we just met but can you do me a huge favor?" she asks shyly, hands tucked between her legs. Eager to make new friends and have a good first impression, I nod, agreeing to whatever she wanted me to do. "You see that boy over there?" she says pointing to this semi-tall guy that I've never seen before. "Well I kind of have a major crush on him, his name is Josh, and I really wanted to be his partner. You know, so it would give me a chance to talk and get to know him. But...." she trails off "You ended up being my partner and I wanted to know if you would be okay with switching?"
"I guess so" I shrug. What could be so harmful about switching? He seemed like a nice guy and I was all for people finding love or whatever. I walk over to the teacher, fumbling with my hands. "um Mrs. Jude, can I switch partners with Josh? I feel like Peyton would work better with him than me."
She lowers her glasses and looks at the sheet of names. "Sure thing Blair, just know that once you switch there isn't switching back, its final" she murmurs, moving names around on the sheet. I smile and say okay, spinning around real quick to give Peyton a thumbs up. She smiles and I turn around to ask who my partner is now. "Since Peyton is now with Josh... your partner is now Luke" she says slowly, finishing the adjustments on her paper.
My gut sinks and I can feel the rest of the year going down the drain. I walk over to him slowly, dreading the decisions I made in the past 5 minutes that I've been in here. "So I guess we're partners now" I say to him, hating every word that's coming out of my mouth. He looks at me gathering his stuff. "Where are you going?" I ask him, as he walks away from me.
"Somewhere other than here. I'll meet you later at your house to talk project or whatever" he explained walking out the door of the classroom, ignoring the calls from the teacher to come back. I roll my eyes and start to jot down some ideas on what our project could be about. I soon get interrupted by a student aid walking into the class, handing my teacher a paper. She skims over it and looks up at me, motioning for me to come to her desk.
"You have a delivery in the front office, someone dropped something off for you. Go pick it up and return quickly please." she says, handing me the paper. I take it and go to the front office, confused on what could be there for me. My parents were at work so they couldn't have left anything for me, and I don't really have any other family in this town. I make it to the office and hand the lady my paper. She takes it and gives me a basket full of Roses.
"This is for me?" I ask, looking at the bunches of flowers, it had to be at least two dozen. She nods, continuing her work as I set them down to check the greeting card attached. I read it slowly trying to understand the words, throwing me completely off guard.
