There's a difference between a Mermaid and a Siren.

Sirens are born from violent, watery deaths. Drowning, Murder, their body being thrown into a watery grave, stuff like that. They sing to sailors--or anyone--and lure them to death when they get to close. They are born at any time.

Mermaids, however, are born when someone who has a great love for the sea--or any other body of water--dies. these deaths must be peaceful, like old age, though some who commit suicide have been known to come back as a mer. and unlike sirens, mer are born under any full moon.

Another thing.

Mermaids cannot cry, they sing and dream, and enjoy a life of solstice. Sirens cannot fall in love, they kill and swim, seduce and destroy.

Sirens do not fear, they sing of a peaceful end. A sirens song is made from the tears of heartbroken lovers. That is why the lustful and the wicked are drawn to her call. her voice echoes the pain and sadness that their blackened souls yearn for. they appear at the unholiest of hours, breaking not only rules but fragile hearts. And sirens love to bargain.

The beautiful, high spirited mer are gone, hunted by humans that they blindly trusted, but the sirens, we still hunt. With tails as black as night, shining brighter than the stars, they lure those who were once destined to be mer to the ocean, where a watery grave is their only future.

Tell me, have you heard a sirens song?

Smiling Finn grimaced as the waters of the moonpool began to churn, and countless voices called out for aid. He crouched as a group of pirates jogged past, diving into the frothing water. With a sigh, he edged his way away from the room, until something made him freeze.

An inhuman scream pierced the air, and when Finn turned, a large black tail burst from the water and pirates stationed around the edge of the moonpool griped it, pinning it down an pulling the creature out.

"Finn", he jumped as Mad Madeline grabbed his arm, yanking him away from the room, "we're not supposed to be here", he turned his head, and froze, "captains orders".

Everything around him was suddenly drowned out as his brown eyes connected with the startling black of the creature, and as he was pulled away from the room, one word echoed in his mind and danced across his lips.

Mermaid.
