her;
it’s nearly midnight. it’s nearly a new year. i can hear them all counting down a minute outside in front of the huge television on the porch. i still remain in the garage at the other end of the backyard. when they reach the number thirty-two, my phone buzzes. i quickly recover it from my pocket and glance at the screen. hesitating, i bring the phone up to my ear.
“hello?”
“hey.”
“…hey.”
he clears his throat. “so, uh.." he hesitates. why does he hesitate?
"where are you?”
i blink. i haven’t heard from him in such a long time, and i would just like to take a minute to take in his raspy voice. his voice does something to me. i didn’t know how long i was silent for until he talks again.
“you there?”
“oh. yeah, i’m here. i’m at a friends place… well, my mom’s friends place. why?”
ten!
“oh, that’s why,” he mutters.
nine!
“hmm?”
eight!
“do you really want to know why i called?”
seven!
“yeah, i'm sorry. what’s up?” please don't think i'm not interested, because i am.
six!
“i’m, uh. i’m on your balcony.”
five!
my eyes widen, “what?"
four!
i hear his throaty laugh. “yeah… pathetic, right. i’ll go.”
three!
“no—wait! hey. why are you there?”
two!
“i just…” he starts. i wait.
one!
“i wanted to see you.”
my heart stops.
