[ Chapter Fourteen ]
A DAY PASSED since the death of Cami O'Connell.
In that time, Raylynn hardly ever left the four walls of her and Klaus's bedroom. Exhaustion overtook her, enveloping her in a dull fog. One thing after another weighed on her mind. From Cami to Lucien to her now newborn son. Raylynn needed to take a few minutes for herself.
Raylynn wanted to help with the chaos. She really did, but there was only so much she could do. Her magic only presented itself a little over a year ago, and aside from that, she had the skills she learned as a hunter. Whatever Lucien had become surpassed that of an Original vampire. She stood little to no chance against him.
Sunlight streamed through the uncovered window in the bedroom. Raylynn laid under the blankets, trying her hardest to sleep when she had the chance. Ryan snoozed away across the room in his crib with no indication he wanted to get up. He slept right on through the night and only cried when he needed a diaper change or was hungry. An amazing baby, so far.
Raylynn fluffed the pillow under her head so she could see where Klaus stood in front of the window. He had not said much after Cami died. She knew that the two of them had been close. The best of friends. They knew each other better than Klaus and his siblings. Raylynn was devastated because of her death, but Klaus had to be completely crushed.
Right before Raylynn's lips parted to speak, Hayley strode into the room. She held what appeared to be a journal in her hands as she approached Klaus.
"Did you bring it?" Klaus questioned, turning to face her.
Hayley nodded and offered him the journal. "Jack wrote down everything your father told him about the ancient werewolves. I've read it. I don't think there's anything in there that's gonna help us kill Lucien, though."
"I'll see for myself." Klaus took the book. "You can go."
Hayley went to leave, but she turned back to the hybrid. "Klaus, I think we should do something about the body -about Cami. I know that she wanted an Irish wake. I can -I can make the arrangements."
Raylynn closed her eyes and shoved her face into the pillow. Cami's body remained in guest room where she died. No one knew what to do with her yet, considering they were still holed up in the compound because of Lucien. On top of that, they were too distraught to do anything in the following hours.
Klaus whirled to the Marshall woman and raised his voice, "it doesn't matter what she wanted!" He fell quiet when his gaze flickered to the bed and then to Ryan's crib. He said in a lower volume, "she's gone. There's no time to sing dirges. We're at war."
