Colors of red, yellow and brownish orange danced along the beaten path as footfalls crept through the grassy knoll. Red and white shoes gently padded through the dirt, creating little tuffs of dusty air to push up from the pressure. A light shiver ran up his lithe form, causing white gloved hands to touch soft peach arms. His blue fur usually stopped the cold air from bothering him, but since the leaves were already falling, it was a clear sign to get the winter coat out soon.
Sonic was itching to start running down the dirt path, past the drying trees who were shedding their dying colors of crinkly life. He contemplated the thought, wondering if it would result in another leaf to the eye. Sometimes it was hard to run around in the fall, mainly because the rainfall of leaves could result in scrapes to the face.
He could hear the water of the lake nearby, lapping gently at the bank, pushing curling grasses over like dominos on rubber bands. Green eyes surveyed the trees, trying to think about the ratio of leaves that were still on them to the ones on the ground, before his head started to hurt.
“ You’re going cross-eyed from thinking too hard, Sonic.”
Blue and peach ears wiggled once before the hedgehog turned to look down the path, finding black and red walking toward him. He hadn’t heard Shadow come up the walk, but he didn’t doubt the other hedgehog’s ability to be sneaky when he wanted to be.
Sonic stuck his tongue out at Shadow, folding his arms against his chest to stifle another shiver.
“ Shut up, Shadow. Or should I remind you of your hobby of brooding in front of windows?”
The black hedgehog frowned and glared slightly.
“ No.”
“ Then don’t tease me about my contemplation.”
Shadow grinned a little. “ But it’s fun.”
“ Don’t be an ass.”
“ What were you thinking’ about anyway?”
A few scattered leaves decided to frolic near Sonic’s head as a low chill came up from the south. The blue hedgehog shivered again, holding his arms.
“ Just wondering if it’d be a good idea to run in the forest with the leaves all falling…”
Shadow’s head tilted up slightly, surveying the leaves and nodded.
“ Ah, yes. Painful thing to get a leaf to the eye or accidentally run into a low hanging branch that you didn’t see because of it being bare.”
“ How’d YOU know I did th—” Sonic started, blinking wide eyes, before he realized that Shadow hadn’t known that he smacked into a branch earlier in the week because of just that reason. Shadow’s red eyes told him that with the quixotic twinkle in them. “ Er…! I mean…” He looked away.
“ You ran into a branch earlier, didn’t you?”
“ No! Of course not!”
“ You’re lying. You can never look me in the eye when you are.”
Sonic spun back, blue quills fluttering as he glared green annoyance at the smirking hedgehog. “ So what!? I’m sure you’ve done it too!”
“ Why’d you run around if you could have avoided injury?”
“ I was cold!” Sonic spat.
“ Hm? Oh, you mean the weather…” Shadow nodded; his eyes closing in thought.
White gloves shifted up peach arms. “ I don’t know why you’re not. The temperature is dropping almost every day.”
“ Must just be my body then.” The Ultimate Life had no idea if there were more properties to his immortality or not. He assumed the latter and figured that he probably had a higher body temperature than the blue hedgehog. “ But I know…” He trailed off.
Sonic lifted his head and turned to look over at the black hedgehog. “ Know what? Ack!” He blinked as suddenly red eyes were right in front of him. He hadn’t heard Shadow move. “ What? What is it?”
“ I know how to warm you up.” Shadow winked, pulling an arm around the blue hedgehog’s back, tugging him close.
Sonic squeaked a little in surprise, putting a hand to Shadow’s white tuft of fur on his chest before giving him a half annoyed look. “ Is that your answer to everything?”
“ I didn’t see you complaining before.” The black hedgehog continued to smirk.
Green eyed rolled as Sonic moved his hand to wrap around Shadow to rest on his lower back. “ You’re incorrigible.”
“ It’ll make you warm.” He winked as another hand squished tender flesh underneath one sexy blue tail.
Another squeak emitted from the cerulean hero as he repaid the favor by wrapping another hand around and gripping at Shadow’s own tail. Hips brushed as the two hedgehogs embraced and smiled at each other as another cool wind sent shivers down spines and leaves falling to the ground.
