Long ago, a king and queen had a baby son named Sonic. What his devoted parents didn’t know was that Sonic’s golden quills contained magical healing powers.A selfish old man named Scrouge knew of the magic in Sonic’s quills and wanted it to keep his self young So he kidnapped the baby and raised him in a tower deep in the woods, never telling him that he was a prince. As Sonic’s quills grew and grew, he loved gazing out the tower window at the lights that floated in the night sky every year on her birthday. He longed to leave the tower and see them up close, but Scrouge refused.Meanwhile, a young thief named Shadow had stolen something special from the King’s castle, and the royal guards were after him.Suddenly, he saw the perfect hiding place—a tower! When Shadow climbed into the tower, Sonic knocked him out with a frying pan. Then he secretly inspected the satchel he carried. Inside, Sonic found a sparkling gold object. It was so familiar. Shadow awoke and found himself tied to a chair with Sonic's long, golden quills. Sonic pointed to his painting of the floating lights. Tomorrow was his eighteenth birthday. If Shadow took him to see the lights, he’d return his satchel. After Shadow agreed to help, Sonic used his quills to climb down from the tower. He'd never been outside before! But when his feet touched the grass, Sonic nearly burst with excitement, exclaiming, “Woo-hoo!” Sonic and Shadow enjoyed their adventure, but they were being chased! Scrouge was looking for them. The royal guards were after Shadow, and so were his angry partners in crime. They wanted the crown!Days passed, and Sonic and Shadow managed to escape their pursuers. One morning, Sonic saw a breathtaking sight: a beautiful kingdom with a castle sitting high above. He headed straight to it! In the town, Sonic was drawn to a painting of the King, the Queen, and their baby, who was known as the lost prince. The child had golden quills and green eyes... just like him! Shadow rowed Sonic out to view the floating lights, which were actually lanterns! Shadow gave Sonic his own lantern to send into the night, and he returned the crown. Then the couple gazed into each other's eyes. They were falling in love. Later, Shadow and Sonic were separated. Scrouge told Sonic that Shadow had only wanted the crown. But he realized Scrouge was lying! Sonic now knew that he was the lost prince! Suddenly, Shadow arrived to rescue Sonic! But Scrouge hurt him badly. He wanted Sonic to stay with him forever. If he did, he’d allow Sonic to heal Shadow. But before Sonic could act, Shadow cut off his quills, which lost its magic and the color turned blue. Without the magic, Scrouge quickly aged and turned to dust. Sonic was now free, but Shadow was dying. “You were my new dream,” he whispered. One of Sonic’s tears fell on Shadow and began to glow... and healed him! Shadow brought Sonic back to the castle. The King and Queen rushed to embrace their lost prince. That night, the entire kingdom celebrated his return by launching hundreds of lanterns—the lights that had guided his home. They lived happily ever after.
