After getting the basic idea, don't fall off the of the school or misuse your powers, Issy tuned out. Just as she was about to give in and take a seat on the grass, Pinky, who finally introduced herself as Gwen, finally wrapped up her speech. "And if you follow those simple rules you won't fall off the school." She attempted to joke. After some polite laughs they were finally moving towards the school.
Issy rolled her eyes as she heard her brother, "Rules? What rules?" honestly teenage boys could be so dumb. She heard the hurt in Layla's voice when she realized he hadn't been listening but staring at Gwen. Oh well, she had enough of her own problems without worrying about her brother's love life. After a lifetime of walking they finally made it to gym where Gwen told them orientation was going to take place. Well, at least there was no work today. Issy plopped down on the first open seat she saw and pulled out her phone texting her mom since she knew she would be worried if they made it ok and Will wouldn't remember.
Seconds later a ball of light shot over the rest of the freshmen that were waiting in the middle of the floor like lost sheep. Turns out the ball of light was their principal, Principal Powers. Issy had to wonder if that was her real name. Either way she could tell this was a lady not to be messed with. After finishing her short speech about power placement, which somehow dad must not have mentioned to Will since he looked a bit green at the idea. Mom had gone over this with her weeks ago, good luck Will. With a "Comets Away!" Their principal turned back into pure light and shot back to her office.
Out of the floor came a podium holding a man in shorts that were way too short, Issy automatically knew this must be the gym teacher. Was there an unwritten rule that gym teachers must make you uncomfortable? He introduced himself, "Welcome, my name is Coach Boomer. Some of you may know me as Sonic Boom, some of you may not." Issy thought she remembered her dad talking about a Boomer in school and wondered if this was him. Before she could think on it too much, he began explaining power placement to those that didn't know, like her brother. "Here's how power placement is gonna work. You will step up here and show me your power, and yes you will do so in front of the entire class." He smiled at the audible groans this caused. She knew gym teachers loved pain.
He continued, "I will then determine where you will be assigned. Hero or sidekick." He started to pace with his hands behind his back. "Every year there are a few students, or as I call them, whiner babies, who see fit to question or complain about their placement. So, let's get this straight now. My word is law, my decisions are final. Are we clear?" The students mumbled a yes. Apparently, that wasn't good enough for Boomer or he just wanted to show off. She was betting on the latter. Powering up he repeated, "I said are we CLEAR?!" the word clear being said in a sonic boom like tone. Immediately they responded, "Yes, Coach Boomer." Much louder this time.
With a blow of his whistle the trials began. "Go time." Said coach Boomer as stairs dropped out of the side of the podium. He looked for his first victim, seeing a red head with glasses she knew he had found his target. "You! What's your name?" The kids stuttered out, "Larry." Coach was seeming to have fun now, "Little Larry, get up here." She heard Layla talking about how unfair this power placement was, she shook her head. For once, Will was right. If life was going to be fair for once, it definitely wouldn't be in high school.
As they all watched Larry put his glasses into his pockets and took a power stance. Issy was intrigued. With a movement like the Hulk, where Larry once stood now there was a giant rock creature. She guessed that could be useful, must help with the bullies. Even coach Boomer seemed to be impressed. "Car!" Boomer yelled while hitting a button on the remote in his hand. A junker of a car falling from the ceiling.
Without strain Larry caught the car holding it above his head. Coach nodded. "Big Larry, HERO!" Her brother's friend Zach must have lost his mind because he voluntarily ran up the steps before the coach had even called for the next person. "Did I say you were next?" asked coach Boomer sarcastically. Zach ignored that, "Name is Zach, Coach Boomer. Try not too drop your clipboard." The Boomer sighed letting the kid go. Zach clapped his hands and stood like he was impressed. "Any day now, superstar." Boomer said tiredly. "I'm doing it." Zach replied. The coach looked closer, "Doing what?" "I'm glowing." Zach seemed hurt he couldn't see it. Boom got closer, "I don't think so." Zach tried to defend himself, "Well it's hard to see in the light, maybe we could turn off these lights, or you could cup your hands and look." Boomer just said, "Sidekick." Zach tried to fight the placement. "Are you sure? Maybe if we could just..." "SIDEKICK!" yelled Coach in his powered-up voice, blowing Zach off of his stage.
Looking for another weak student he spotted Isolde. Too bad he picked the wrong person to try to humiliate. "You, Elsa. Up here now." Issy rolled her eyes, "No can do, Coach." She said holding up her crutches. Boomer looked shocked, supers were hardly ever born with any physical issues. He quickly shook it off though. "What's your name? What's your power freshman?" he asked. "Isolde Stronghold, Ice." She called back confidently. She continued, "Why don't you try dropping that car again for me, Coach?" Boomer looked shocked, no one ever asked for the car and she wasn't even on his stage.
Wanting to see what this girl, a Stronghold no less, was up to he decided to play along. "Car!" he called hitting the button once again. Once the car began to fall it suddenly stopped. A shelve of ice having grown and holding it in the air. Issy quietly looked to the Coach for her placement. She's definitely a Stronghold, thought the coach. "Hero." He said pulling back his car into the ceiling. Issy hadn't been too worried about her placement, having had great control of her powers since they had been activated since birth. So she absorbed the ice and let the coach get on with his torture of the others.
After seeing some of the powers that people had she wondered why their DNA saw that as useful. She wasn't very impressed with the hero's though either, in fact the shapeshifter kinda gave her the creeps. Maybe she was just too jaded being the child of who she was.
She knew that nothing good was going to happen when Layla refused to show her powers due to her beliefs. Boomer was not one to be reasoned with, he immediately assigned her to sidekick. Boomer pointed to Will and said they would pick up after lunch with him. Will seemed to shake slightly.
This will be interesting.
