Isolde was shocked to see that she already knew the school nurse. She used to volunteer at the super's hospital on weekends and was one of the people that helped to save her. She was a bit mad but a great nurse. "Nurse Spex?!" Exclaimed Issy.
The older woman spun around and grinned. "Didn't think you'd be seeing me here did you?" She asked jokingly. Issy felt a wave of relief that it only did the nurse already know her condition, but probably knew more about it than her. She had been dreading the explanations that she had been anticipating.
Spex looked behind the girl, "and I see you've already found one of the schools hidden gems. You always were a smart girl. Able to see more than others." She winked at Issy, making her blush. "Um, Warren and I just met and he was nice enough to help me down here." Spex laughed, "Well that's how all great romances start! With nothing and then something. Friendship turns to love." Spex had a far away look in her eyes.
Issy cleared her throat. "Well, Warren. Thank you for helping me get here safely. If you want to put down my bag I'll be ok from here." Warren looked relieved to be getting away from the eccentric nurse. "Ya, I'll just...leave this here then." He turned to leave, but then turned back. "Um, I'll see you at lunch tomorrow?"
Issy couldn't help but blush and smile. "Ya, I'll be there." He nodded with a smile and left. When Issy turned back to nurse Spex she saw the woman giving her a knowing smile. "You picked a good one there. Lots of potential." Issy stuttered, " oh, I'm not...we...he..." she gave up. "Could I get my pills please?" She finally asked.
"Oh!" Nurse Spex said hitting herself in the head. "Of course, here I am talking and you're in pain. It would come off if it wasn't attached." Going to a cabinet with biometric locks she placed her palm and the door popped open. Taking the ones with Stronghold on them she handed them to Issy with a bottle of water.
It seemed her body decided that it was a bit too late. She felt a horribly familiar tingle in her leg. Well, she guessed her body couldn't have chosen a better time to revolt. With a shaking voice she called, "Nurse Spex!" Hearing the tone of her voice, Nurse Spex jumped into action. Sitting the girl with on the bed in the room she helped her out her legs up.
Quickly strapping the poor girls legs to the bed, she was glad she has asked for these when she knew one of her favorite patients was starting, she attempted to keep the twisting to a minimum. Grabbing ice packs she laid them directly on the girls jeans hoping to get the cold to numb the muscles faster. There wasn't much they could do to stop the muscle. But they could keep the pain to the minimum.
Spex waited a few minutes for the ice to give the girl some relief. "Dear, I'm going to call your mom. You've already been placed and..." "No." said Issy. "My brother still hasn't gone and I can wait." Though she didn't like it Nurse Spex understood. "Alright, but you're going to stay in here with me. I'll let Coach Boomer know and you can meet up with your brother when it's time to go home."
That was more than she thought she would get so Issy made no complaint. Nurse Spex took the ice packs always to freeze them again in case of another need for them. "Take a nap, dearie. It will do your body a world of good. I'll wake you when it's time to go home." Issy was already half asleep from how tired a spasm made her so she just let herself quietly drift off.
It wasn't long before Coach Boomers yelp woke her up. Did he really need to shake the school? Whoever his victim was she felt bad that the whole school heard him. She closed her eyes back, but it wasn't meant to be since moments later the door flew open and slammed. She turned her head to see who was hurt, then quickly sat up, seeing the person was her brother.
"William! Are you ok?!" He was holding his head and ribs looking quite the worse for wear. She realized what had happened. She put her face in her hands. " oh Will, why didn't you tell him you didn't have powers?" "I did!" Will defends. "He didn't believe me. Thought I was joking. He tried to smash me with a car and threw me into a wall!"
Issy sighed, "He shouldn't have done that but you should have told mom and dad before we even got here so this wasn't a problem." Since he was well enough to argue, she figured he would be alright. She laid back down and closed her eyes listening to him and nurse Spex talk.
She heard tapping as nurse Spex tested his reflexes. "You know I remember doing this to your father when he was just your age. Kicked me right through that wall." "You uh...haven't called him yet have you?" Will asked worriedly. "Like I want to be the one to tell The Commander his son has no powers?" She asked incredulously, pretending to hit herself with the reflex hammer. Ok, Issy had to admit it would take a brave person to make that call. Her dad didn't take news he didn't want to hear well.
"Ok let's take a look at those ribs." Spex said. Issy knew that Nurse Spex main power was x-ray vision so this was always very helpful. "Well, nothing is broken." She said. Will made a sound of frustration. "Ya, except for me not having my powers." It took all of Issy's willpower to stay quiet when he said that. Having powers wasn't everything, she hated the way William thought their parents wouldn't love him if he told them the truth. It might take some time for dad, but she knew mom would process the news and keep going just like she did when they found out Issy would be different. Her mom was a problem solver and would solve this too.
"Well! Maybe you're just a late bloomer." Said Nurse Spex. "You could get one of them or both! Or even one if your grandparents like your sister." She continued. Will couldn't leave it like that however, he had to pick at the answer. "But when will I get them?" He asked in a begging tone. Nurse Spex went on a bit of a tangent talking about radioactive spiders and toxic waste. Issy tunes back in when she heard, inherit. Spex sounded a bit sad at this point. "Kids who inherit their powers...well impossible to say." Nurse Spex let him pick out a lollipop. "Most sidekicks are the children of one super parent, and one ordinary parts." She said modeling with lollipops and tongue depressors. "But you and your sister. You have two super parents. Now there have been cases, though rare, that a child with two super parents...never gets any powers...whatsoever." Will looked defeated. "There are? Like who?" Nurse Spex noded, "Well, I know of only one. Ron Wilson, bus driver." She said pointing to Ron who they could see battling imaginary evil outside the window.
Well, this was an interesting day.
