Nicole's POV
"Good morning, Miss Adams," Simon says as I enter his office.
"Hi," I say shyly.
He smiles. "Have a seat."
I nod and sit in one of the leather chairs across from his desk.
"How are things with you? I trust you are enjoying the tour?" he asks.
"Uh, good, I guess, yeah it's a lot of fun." I say nervously. Then I remember something. "The boys all say hi,"I stammer. He raises his eyebrows and smirks at me.
"You nervous?" he asks.
First I shrug, but soon I slowly nod. I guess I should just let go of trying to be intimidating, because I'm obviously so nervous that I'm blurting out the first things that enter my mind.
"Don't worry, you're not in any trouble," he says.
"Then, with all due respect, Sir, why am I here?" I ask him, voicing the question I've been wondering about for the last day.
"Well, I'm sure you know about the video," he says.
"No, I don't, actually. Louis mentioned something, he said something about me asking you about it, but I had to leave before anyone said anything."
"Well, let me tell you, you have some great friends, Nicole. Obviously, I know that you've been performing at their concerts, and I had to give my okay, naturally. We've been keeping a close tab on you lately, and I'd been meaning to call some sort of meeting with you for a while, just to scope things out. But when I received an email from Louis last week, containing a video that the boys made on why I should sign you, complete with clips of you at rehearsals and in your hotel room singing, I definitely wanted to meet with you sooner." He pauses to let everything sink in.
They did that for me? I can't believe it, I really couldn't ask for any other internationally famous boy band to be best friends with. Although the fact that they must have secretly taped me makes me want to kill them slowly when I get back.
"So…" I begin, waiting for him to build on his words.
"So, I'd like to see whether you're worth signing or not. Of course, these things take time, and I think being on tour is a positive overall experience for you if you want to go into this business, so I'd like to wait until the tour is over if we're going to go ahead with the record deal. I saw what you said at the interview from yesterday so I assume that you'd be open to this, correct?"
"I… you want to… sign me?" I breathe in disbelief. "I don't know, I mean it's a huge decision for me and it's going to take a lot of time for it to sink in--" I start.
"Miss Adams, I don't want you to jump straight into this nor over think it. First I'd like to hear you sing in person, a Capella, before I can make a decision. Then I'd like you to record something so we can hear what you sound like when professionally recorded, and then we have to talk about fine details: getting you an agent, your image, what kind of sound you'd like to have, things like that. After we do all this, I'm going to show you the reality of this business, the risks you will need to take and the time you will need to put in, and then you can make your decision and let me know. But right now, let me hear you sing any song you want, something you haven't sung at a concert, though, because I've already seen all your performances."
"Uh, okay," I say hesitantly.
I take a few deep breaths to warm up my vocal cords and I hum a couple of notes, and then I start to sing the first song that comes to mind, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift. It's been stuck in my head for the last couple of days, and I figure, why not?
