Sky Beast

I woke my mam when a sound like thunder,
Roarin' on the moor,
Shook the house and made my footsteps blunder.
She said, "Bolt the door!"

I went and locked it like she told me to,
Then asked, "What's that sound?"
She turned green and said weakly, "Need the loo..."
The noise shook the ground.

While waiting for Mam, I paced down the hall.
I heard a *BOOM*
That made me jump and several things fall
Around in the room.

With my hands still a-trembling, I pulled back
The window curtain.
The nighttime gave no view but solid black;
That much was certain.

A flash like frosty blue lightning lit up
The darkened midnight.
I saw a giant albatross-like shape
During that bright light.

I'd never heard of a bird being that size.
Had it caused the storm?
"No," I told myself, "don't believe your eyes."
But such a strange form...

Mam came back and pulled me away from our
Glass, rightly quakin'.
"High gates and low rivers! We have lost pow'r!"
She exclaimed, shakin'.

My stomach was a-flutter but then dropped
When I noticed that
All the boomin' and the shakin' stopped.
"Hold up, where's the bat?"

Almost as soon as this strange thing began,
All of it just ceased.
I could never quite sleep soundly since then,
The night of the sky beast.
