"THAT IS MY PROMISE TO YOU."

Today wasn't like any other day. It was a rather silent grey morning with a dull sky threatening rain. Flocks of bird, one after another flew over the cemetery, in hopes that they could avoid the curtain of rain that beats down from the heavens. Thunders then came marching from far away with increasing tread but unlike the birds that flew freely across the sky, the broken girl stood rooted in front of the carved stone of cold cement that witnessed the tears of guilt and denial.
She moved closer to the tombstone before placing her palm on it, trying her very best to hold in her tears as she held onto the piece of memory she had left of her mother. The rain began to pour over her, preventing anyone to witness the tears that started streaming down her cheeks.
The only friend that was there to mourn the loss of her broken friend, walked over behind her and place an arm over her shoulder in comfort. "Scarlett, it's time to go," She took off her leather jacket before placing it over Scarlett's head to protect her from the heavy rain. "Stella, can you give me a moment..." She took a good glace at her fried, hesitating whether to leave her be before nodding her head in silence and left a bouquet of red roses on the stone. She then took one last deep bow onto the ground before standing back up and walked away to the car.
"Mama..." She leaned in and placed her forehead against the stone before softly whispering, "Ever since I was little, I had everything. You name it, I got it... You know, Dad took very good care of me." I moved my palm across the carving of the stone. "But all I ever wanted was to get to know my mother..." The rain that washed over her was a way for Scarlett to cry her heart out without anyone noticing. It was as though the sky was crying with her. "When I was about 6 years old, yeah that was my first time ever riding a bike, and somehow it was like a big deal... Dad had called the uncles over and we had a party, I think he called it the "Roll Baby Roll" or something? Oh, it was bad, so you didn't miss anything." She got onto her knees and push her hair off her face, "My first word was "bubbles", I didn't crawl but went straight to walking. I won gold with honours for a writing competition... Ironically it was about mothers. Friends? Well, I don't have many but 3 is all I need... With them, it's always us against the world."
The little redhead let out a small chuckle realising how silly it is to be talking to a tombstone. But what she didn't know is that her mother was watching her closely from beside the tombstone. Listening to all the things she had missed out in her daughter's life. Scarlett then took a deep breath before letting it all out along with all the sadness she felt in her. After everything that they had both been through, all the pain of any sort, she wanted to let her mom off with great memories. Knowing that she will be alright. To allow her to leave peacefully. That's all.
"You may not have been there for the morning cuddles, every single day. Nor could you lie to me and tell me that the portrait I scribbled of our family was the most beautiful drawing you have ever seen." I wiped a tear that slides down my cheeks before laughing to myself. "You know, the other time, when I went over to my friend's house, her mother would wait for her at the gates with smiles on her face ready to welcome her home... But when... When... When I come home every day, you weren't there to welcome me into your loving arms. When I conquered my fear of blood, you weren't there to tell me how proud you were. And... And the first time I ever stood up to defend my best friend on the playground... My best friend, Sky..."
Scarlett's eyes were once again filled with tears, reminiscing the good times they had spent together. The day when she had defended Sky on the playground from all the bullies that were picking on her for being different, for having blonde hair with sky blue eyes. Only then had she found out about Sky's family that was abusing and torturing her. So out of her good heart, she took her into her family. Knowing that she had to share the little thing she had. Love. But that didn't stop her. We shared everything. The house. The bed. She even told her family to love Sky the way they loved her. And at that moment, all that Rosemarie wanted to do was be there for her daughter. Even she didn't understand why it happened... The betrayal... Where Sky had looked her straight in the eye and threatened to let her fall to her death. The same person who let her get on the plane she knows was going to explode. She slowly sat down in front of Scarlett and looked deep into her grey eyes. Scarlett was in pain and once again all she could do was watch from afar. But that clearly wasn't enough for her, so she lifts her hands and gently places it on her daughter's shoulder to tell her everything is going to be okay. As if feeling the cold touch on her shoulders, Scarlett's head bolted up as she flashes a small smile knowing that her mother was there.
