Chapter 1
LB left the building.
Before she did, she called Hitch.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing; just make sure the Redfort kid stays where she is. I'm going out and I don't need her finding why and messing stuff up."
"Sure - but," Hitch's tone seemed concerned, "who're you meeting? Not her, surely? Or him?"
LB didn't reply.
"LB?"
"I'll be fine.""You made it," came the Count's clear rich voice. It should've been a question, but it wasn't. "How peculiar."
"Nothing here is strange," replied the woman calmly. "Except from the fact you asked to meet me. Why?"
"I kept your secret, didn't I?"
"You told Redfort."
"Not necessarily," the Count put his hands up, an amused glint in his eye. "I hinted, that was all. Ms Redfort barely believed me - it was only by pure luck she found out herself."
LB narrowed her eyes, as she came face-to-face with the Count.
"You still haven't answered my question."
"It's for the girl," the man gave a dramatic, theatre-like sigh. "Children are just so difficult."
"Then give her to me," LB said. "Let me take away your problem."
The Count looked at her with interest.
"You would do that, would you? How kind of you, LB. But, unfortunately, she isn't for trade."
"She's mine," hissed LB, gritting her teeth.
"Ours," corrected the Count. He was enjoying this, LB realized in disgust.
"Where is she? If it's for her, where is she?"
The Count walked around.
"Yes, LB, where is she?"
The woman's face remained blank, though inside she was furious.
"You're telling me you lost her?"
"No. Patience is a virtue, dear LB. Assumptions are not. I did not 'lose' her. She ran."
"And you're telling me this why?" snapped LB. She was confused now. This wasn't like the Count. Of course, if he was trying to play mind games with her, it was, but otherwise, no. "And why did she run? What did you do to her?"
The man gave a smile.
"So many questions," he pulled out a pocket-watch and looked at it, "and not enough time to answer them. Just heed this; there was a child who could not choose, between a spider and its food. In the end, the question remains; will it have the almightiest reign?"
And with that, the Count disappeared into the shadows, leaving LB to herself.
