Chapter 3

The next morning, Tuesday, Ruby woke up with a groan, before remembering last night's encounter.
She picked up a phone, this one a donut shape, and rang the Crew household.
"Hey, Clancy," Ruby tried to stifle a yawn.
"Since when are you up this early, Rube?" Clancy replied.
"Yeah well bozo, I'm turning a new leaf. Anyhow, had a real funny visit from a certain crazy."
"Not - him?" whispered Clancy. Ruby stumbled into the bathroom, and grabbed a toothbrush.
"Course not. But if you must know, meet me at the Donut Diner at 9:40."
"You're gonna be late. You're always late. It's so annoying."
"I'll be there by 10, I promise, Clance, stop worrying."

Ruby walked into the Diner, wearing a t-shirt which read, Bore me to death.
"Heya Clance, what's your problem? You look like Olive broke your bike."
Clancy Crew, Ruby's best friend, flapped his arms.
"You're late! It's ten past ten!"
Ruby shrugged. "Got caught in an interesting coversation with Mrs D. Anyhow," she lowered her voice to a whisper. "I saw Kaina last night. She was in my backyard."
"What was she doing there?" asked Clancy, his eyes widening with excitement.
"She told me to meet her in the Japenese Gardens, tonight. And she gave me this," Ruby showed Clancy the business card.
"It looks like the one the Australian gave you."
"Yeah."
"So, you gonna meet Kaina tonight?"
"Of course I am," replied Ruby firmly. "I gotta do this for LB, bozo. I gotta convince Kaina to join Spectrum."
"Good luck with that," Clancy said sarcastically.

She'd been staying somewhere else...

... trying to lay low for a few days. She'd covered her tracks well.
There was a knock on the door. She jumped.
No one knew she was there. No one was supposed to know.
An envelope slid under the door. Curiously, she opened it.
It read,
Do it tonight. I know where you are. I do not need your loyalty, but it'd be a pity if your friend tripped up on her job. She already failed me once, imagine what would happen if she failed again.
Bring the girl to me.
Don't test my patience again.
She gasped, and instantly paled.
He knew where she was.

Nowhere was safe.
