My eyes continued to be distracted from their focus on my newest painting, the collaboration of dark colors expressing my innermost thoughts not seeming as important as the figures moving back and forth in my peripheral vision. I set aside my art supplies, pouring out a whiskey before finally giving in and moving to the library's window. The facing apartment had successfully pulled in new residents, Adelina's 'garden followers' joining members of a werewolf pack in moving in the heavily pregnant crescent wolf.
I emptied my glass when Hayley again came into view. Her stomach was much more prominent now, and it filled me with a deep fear each time I saw her. Adelina had encouraged our relationship, and although my weariness remains, I have developed a new respect for the little wolf and the situation she's been placed in. And while I argued my child strictly staying with me, Adie made me realize that compromise is essential for Hayley and I to both successfully raise our daughter.
Daughter...that simple word makes it all feel that much more real now. I don't know the spell she used or the trinket she played with, but my heretic friends' reveal of my baby's gender lit a fire under my arse of how soon I would share charge of a life I helped create. It's terrifying...
It was only at that moment that I fully understood the difference Adelina's presence has made.
My daughter can now safely grow up without the threat of her fathers past enemies, she will be surrounded by her complete and loving family, the city in which she lives not only thrives on supernatural entities but is full of so many who will accept her. She'll never be alone, or scared of a looming battle--or separated from those who care for her most. And no-matter what species she becomes, she'll be mentored instead of shamed for what she is. I don't know what world would have derived from Adelina remaining dead, but I know my life wouldn't have been this filled with love and hope if she weren't here today--if she never cared for me and my family the way in which she does. I owe her everything, nothing I do could ever repay her for the life she's been able to give me--
A familiar voice caught my attention, "Fancy place--look who's going up in the world(!)" My brows furrowed with Elena's tone, my eyes dragged away from the facing apartment complex to now focus on the closed office doors.
"I'm the successful leader of a city overwhelmed by supernatural creatures, not much to complain about really..." I poured a second drink with Adelina's response, leaning against the wall and devoting my complete attention to the conversation.
"At least you're humble about your new situation(!)"
"Only with you, Katherine," I again emptied my glass with the revelation of which doppelganger had entered Mikaelson territory. "And while I'd love nothing more than to have a nice drink and get deep into our catch-up, you were invited here for a reason."
