CHAPTER FOUR

BADASS ACKERMAN

The air is cool and crisp, it nips at the exposed skin from under the girl's jean jacket. As usual, Gwenyth walks to school with her best friend Jughead, but she feels off. It was like a buzz in the air, something chattering with unease. She thought about mentioning it to the boy next to her, but for some reason, she couldn't. She didn't want to because she knows Jughead would just tell her everything is fine or that it's just her anxiety. He'd ask if she took her medication that morning or if there might've been any trigger, but Gwen knew it wasn't just her anxiety.

The beginning of school went like normal. She went to her classes and stuck her head down in order not to get noticed or singled out. Then break rolled around and she saw the Serpents huddled together at a table watching something on a laptop. She'd been walking with the Jones boy who was occupied talking to his girlfriend.

The two friends walked up to the table and Jughead being his sarcastic self said, "Hey. I'm guessing we're not watching funny cat videos."

There was a pause and Toni gave the girl a smile in greeting. Sweet Pea had paused the video and turned it around to show the pair, "Check this out. Some sick-in-the-head Northsider posted a crazy-ass video, and we were just talking..."

Gwen eyed the laptop to register who it was and she took a sharp intake of breath when she identified him. She gave Jug a panicked look and he returned it, but he was quick to question, "About what?" The blonde shifted in her spot and bit her lip in worry for her friend. Archie and her may not be close, but she doesn't want that dumbass to get himself hurt.

"Fogarty wants to earn his Serpent stripes," Sweet Pea says and pats his friend on the shoulder. "I say bring us the head of that Northsider, and you're in."

Fangs keeps his eyes on Jughead with a smug expression, "I'm down with that." His words seemed to please Sweet Pea as the tall boy starts banging his fist with excitement at the idea of beating the red-headed Northsider down.

"Please don't!" Gwenyth squeaks. She realizes her mistake as all eyes are on her now and her big eyes widen like a deer caught in headlights, and that's exactly how she feels.

Toni raises her eyebrows with a questioning expression. Sweet Pea laughs, "What? Is he your little boyfriend or something, shorty?" The rest of the group laughs except for Toni who slaps the boy on his shoulder. Gwen grits her teeth to try not to give a snarky response that could get her in trouble.

The blonde glares the Serpent down, her bright blue eyes clouded. Jughead steps in to take attention off of her, "Just don't." His words worked on diverting attention as Sweet Pea looks up the boy with the beanie expectantly.

"What, Jones?" the taller male asks, the familiar rebellious fire in his eyes shines as he speaks.

"I know this guy, he's a milquetoast. He's a football player. It's kind of a lame target, is all I'm saying," Jughead explains to the group with Gwen listening intently. "You wanna prove something? Why don't you go after the Black Hood?"
