Chapter 10

We finally finished setting up, and May and Bronie disappear behind the waterfall a few seconds later. I'll check on them in a minute. I walk over to the blanket meant for me, Twyla, Ella, and Daniel. Twyla and Ella are already sitting down and eating.

When I walk over, Twyla says, "Welcome to the singles party!" and I laugh. We sit down and talk for a while with Daniel coming to sit down with us at some point. I see Ben and Violet sit by a tree, talking and laughing.  Rose and Lucas disappear at some point to a place unknown at some point.

We're all just sitting and laughing when they come.

It was all so fast, I almost didn't see the arrow hit Violet. Almost.

I see her go down and hear Ella scream. Ben kneels down besides her and checks for a pulse when my vision is blocked. The boy, the same stupid boy, jumps in front of me, Twyla, Ella, and Daniel. About ten men surround us. I summon flames to my hands when I see two figures with them.

It's Bronie and May. I have no idea what happened to Ben or Rose and Lucas. I just hope they're okay.

They hold knives to their necks.

I back down and put my hands down out of fear for them.

The boy smiles. I wish I had a name for him to just call him something other than 'the boy.'

He is about to say something when he is tackled by Ben. Ben looks like he's about to murder him.

I am so focused on this that when the men holding Bronie and May drop to the ground, knocked unconscious, I don't see it.

I do hear Lucas yelling, "Back off!" and Rose screaming, "Do it!" after him. I turn to look at them to see holding swords, standing over the two unconscious men. Bronie is holding May right besides them. I have barley any time to absorb the vents before I quickly send flames at anyone who wasn't a friend.

And anyone who wasn't a friend scrammed.

I turn back to see how Ben was.

The boy had gotten away from him and he was on the ground just laying down.

I did a quick check on everyone. Everyone looked scared, but no one seemed hurt. I went over to Lucas to ask what had happened to the men holding May and Bronie. He just said that they got away and I left to check on Ben.

He was still laying there and I sat down next to him.

"Hey," I said.

"They killed Violet," he says with no emotion.

"Are you sure? She could be-"

"She's gone. It went right through her heart." He cuts me off.

I am silent for a few seconds before saying, "I'm sorry. I didn't want anyone to get hurt when we set off, I swear."

He turns towards me with an angry look in his eyes.

"You knew it was a possibility!" He laughs a crazy laugh. "We talked about it, me and Violet. We talked about what would happen if one of us did die. You should know, we've been together for a month now." I gape at him.

Seeing my expression, he smiles and nods, "Yeah, we have. So anyway, we talked about how realist it would be for one of us to die. She laughed and said, 'Me dying? Right.' " He shook his head.

"But looked at what you've done. You brought this upon her. You did."

I try saying, "Ben, I'm sorry okay? I would of gladly of died in her place. Please Ben, calm down."

He had this crazy look in his eyes that scared me. It looked like his eyes were turning completely black. He shook his head again and said, "I'm going for a walk," and left.

I sat there and felt like crying. That wasn't like Ben. He was always optimistic. Well, he did just watch his love die in front of him. And that reminded me.

I slowly turn towards Violet's body. Around me, the others were cleaning up or doing things to occupy themselves. I honestly don't blame them. Our friend just died, I don't want to dwell on it and neither do they.

No matter what they're doing, they're avoiding the body. I creep up to it. Violet, it really is Violet. For some reason I thought it wouldn't look like her, it would just be some lifeless body, but no, it's her.

I start crying. I can't help it. Violet, though quiet, was always there, always supported. No matter what. I think about what to do. We need a burial, but we can't stay here much longer. I realize the truth of this.

We took our time here. We need to find the other two and get this prophecy over with. I tell myself to breath and rise.

I shout to the others and explain everything I've thought of. Ella says she'll go check on Ben and we all get ready for Violet's ceremony.
