‘Well, look at that. The little faggot’s finally decided to come back to school.’ Vixen, my worst enemy and top jock, sneers down at me.

‘Oi! Say that again and you’ll be getting a fist in your face!’ Charlie shoves him in the chest, her green eyes flaring with anger. I grab her arm and pull her back next to me

‘It’s alright Charlie, I can handle it,’ I mutter. She huffs but doesn’t reply

‘You’re so weak,’ Vixen hisses, ‘You can’t even fight back, you just leave that to your bitch girlfriend.’

That’s it. I can handle him pushing me around, but when he brings my friends into it? He’s going down. I step into his personal space.

‘Firstly, you just contradicted yourself. You called me a faggot and then imply that Charlie is my girlfriend. I’m gay, I don’t go for girls, you dickhead. And secondly, just because I refuse to hit back or answer back doesn’t mean I’m weak. It just means I don’t give a damn about what you think of me. But insulting my friends? That’s weak.’

He glares down at me before one of his mates tugs on his arm and mutters something about being late. Finally he stalks off down the corridor away from us but not before I hear,

‘Yeah, you’re fucking the other twin…’

I gawp down the corridor at his retreating back, his swagger telling me he knows that I heard his last words. A quick glance at Charlie, and her murderous face, confirms my fears that she had heard him too.

I sigh and head into the classroom, now almost 19 minutes late. The looks I get tell me that the whole class heard everything that went on outside. I blush and quickly slip into my seat between the twins, just as the morning announcements come on over the sound system.

I can tell Charlie is still fuming; she and Jared are having a silent conversation over my desk. Charlie then points at Jared and then me, and I know she’s telling him what Vixen said as he left. I slump even further down in my seat as his eyes widen and then his face sets. I start to worry.

‘Jared,’ I whine, ‘Don’t do anything stupid,’ He glances at me then quickly turns his head away.

He deserves whatever’s coming,’ Charlie growls. Jared nods his head firmly. A small smile begins to tug at my mouth, rapidly turning into the world’s biggest grin.

‘AWWW, YOU GUYS!!’ I wrap my arm around each of their necks. Jared almost falls off his chair, Charlie does. The momentum pulls Jared and I, and the desks, down on top of her. We end up in a giant pile of arms, legs and tables, laughing fit to bust. Even Jared.

I fiddle with the zip on my hoodie as I walk to my next class. I’m starting feel really nervous about being behind. I mean, I left. For three months. And having dyslexia doesn’t really help. What if we’ve started an essay due in tomorrow in every class! And the teachers all decide that I still have to do it and I don’t get any extra time to do it! I think I start hyperventilating, I feel like I’m about to pass out. Jared nudges me with his shoulder, or rather his upper arm, and grins.

‘We don’t have any essays except for one in English, and yes, Mrs Collin will give you extra time because you were away. Stop panicking and breath, Jace. You really haven’t missed that much.’

I just stand there with my mouth open.

‘Bu….y…you didn’t….SINCE WHEN CAN YOU READ MY THOUGHTS!!!’ He just chuckled.

‘It’s twin intuition, and I know you aren’t my twin, but it still works. Plus, I know that face. You get that look on face at the beginning of every year before you start rolling around on the floor in a complete panic because we have homework from every single teacher.’ I blink.

‘Oh.’

He rolls his eyes and continues down the hall. Charlie comes skipping up behind me, looks at my stunned face and Jared’s retreating back and jumps up and down.

‘WHAT DID I MISS!’ she screeches in my ear. I jump about a foot in the air and drop my stuff.

‘ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME DEAF?’ I yell back.

‘Do you really want her to answer that?’ A voice from behind me interrupts Charlie just as she opens her mouth. I spin around, and practically slip on a loose piece of paper. Charlie catches me just as I begin to fall and I manage to steady myself before looking up at the owner of the voice.

Oh. My. God.

A guy roughly my height with dark, chocolate brown hair, falling into bright blue eyes. His black jeans and dark blue t-shirt really bring out his eyes…

I suddenly realised I’m checking the guy out. I mentally face-palm. Stop acting like such a girl, Jace! You might be gay, but you are definitely not turning into one of those girls who obsess over people!

“Earth to Jace!” Charlie’s fingers snap in front of my face, bringing me back. She shoves my shove back into my arms as I watch the guy walk off into his next class.

“When did he get here?!” I hiss. Charlie starts pulling me towards our biology class as she answers.

“The day before you left,”

“What?!” I practically face-plant, “How did I not see him!”

“You were too busy complaining about how your parents were irresponsible, pulling you out in the middle of school,” she replies matter-of-factly.

“Oh!” I groan, “Why!”

I yell at the ceiling while she drags me into the science lab, plonks me down next to Jared and walks away. I thunk my head down on the desk and moan.

“Tell him to stop being such a drama queen!” I lift my head up enough to see Charlie sitting at the desk opposite next to that guy from the hall. I glare at her.

“You are dead to me,” I hiss, fire-laser beams hypothetically from my eyes. She and that guy, (I really need to learn his name. I can’t keep calling him that guy. Instead I name him Hall Guy) grin at me. Jared’s face is gormless as he looks to Charlie then to me and then back to Charlie. Finally he shrugs and rolls his eyes.

“She’d be dead to you too if she did what she did to me to you,” I huff.

“I’m sure that made sense in your head sweetie,” Jared teased. He got up to collect whatever things we were using this lesson. I thunk my head back down on the desk as Charlie and Hall Guy laugh. Life was so unfair.
