Even late in the night she could feel that her parents weren't asleep. It must have been almost an hour, but she was lying on the bed with her eyes open, staring at the wall. There was a silence and yet it wasn't quiet. It was the calm before the storm.
This had happened several times over the past seven years of her life. It was something she didn't like. Because she knew that this would be the beginning of something bad.
And it started sometime after midnight.
"WOULD YOU JUST SHUT UP?"
"Why should I? Or is it just allowed for men to yell at the top of their voice?"
Lying down on her bed, Amelia tried her all to block out the yells outside her room. Her eyes fixed onto the sky outside, she wished to see a UFO or a shooting star or even some bird grazing the vast surface of navy blue. Or she wished to just fall asleep.
Anything really, just to save her heart from pounding so fast.
She pulled the blanket over her head, closed her eyes and tried to block the raising voices outside.
