In just about every small town, there's always a school that is known as the best. The school that has the rudest kids with the nicest cars. Mount Crest is that school in my town. The kids radiated arrogance and if they even glanced at you, it wasn't a good sign. I'm not trying to base this off of what everyone says -because everyone does say this- I'm basing this off of my experience. In the times that we played against Mount Crest, the permanent smirk on their face that wasn't half as endearing as Calum's. They treated our campus like trash and they didn't treat the students here any better.
One of the blonde girls turned to look at us and out of habit, Eden looked away. Neither Isadora or Calum did though, so I stayed put as well. The blonde chick elbowed her big friend and he stared at us too. They walked over to us with an unmistakable gleam in their piercing blue eyes that always unsettled me. A lot of the kids at Mount Crest had the same blue eyes that sucked the color out of the sky. They walked towards us with their chins up and their chest out. They could be taking a short trip to throw their trash away -though I'm sure they didn't even have the courtesy of even doing that- and they still would have to do it with an overwhelming sense of pride in every step.
When the two approached us Isadora put down her ice cream on the table and smiled at the couple, but even her smile didn't look welcoming. It was the kind that made you want to run the other way and in that moment, I was very grateful that Isadora was on my side. I couldn't process how the two were not scared out of their minds.
"Isadora, Calum. I see you've made some new untalented friends." The boy said to me. He cocked his head to the side, looking down at Isadora and when his eyes met mine I finally recognized him. Anthony Lanx. Lanx was the reason I was benched half of my sophomore year, he was also the reason my arm broke sophomore year. He was on the lacrosse team for Mount Crest.
"Anthony, I'm sure you know Carlisle." Isadora said and glanced at me, "Eden." She looked over at Eden who was cowering in his seat.
"Oh, I know Carlisle." Anthony pulled up a chair next to me and gave me a smile that felt oddly heartwarming. "And how could I forget his sidekick Eden." Eden's eyes shot up at Anthony and he pressed his lips into a line.
A lot of people called Eden a lot of things to get on his very last nerve. Luckily for him, he was very patient and he had a high tolerance for annoying -I mean he was my friend. Most of the things people said about him bugged me more than it did him. I'm not saying Eden was picked on, quite the contrary, but I am saying that no one could really rile up his feathers. If he got into an argument no one could make him explode, his comeback would remain calm with perfect grammar (which scared me the most) and he always won the argument because the person he was arguing with always exploded. But Anthony Lanx found the one thing that made Eden tick. The word sidekick.
When we were kids my Dad liked to say that Eden and I were attached to the hip. He always compared us to the cliches that best friends always get but as we grew older I leaned more into sports and Eden leaned into clubs. That didn't stop us from being really close, but it sure didn't let other people see us as equals.
"You're not allowed in here," Isadora said before Eden could reply. "Didn't you see the sign? No predators." She glanced up the window just to make sure the sign still sat there.
"We came here to warn you." The girl with Lanx spoke up and Isadora calmly turned to face her.
"A warning from Nat? The vampire who cried wolf?" Calum said.
"A blood moon is coming in two weeks," Nat said simply.
"We don't believe in superstitions." Calum said bluntly and Isadora shifted in her seat.
"Well, how about the fact that we saw someone die on that day?" Nat pushed.
"Someone dies everyday." Calum retaliated.
Nat groaned in frustration, "I know you don't approve of us, but believe me when I say that when the blood moon comes something very bad will happen. I saw it happen and you two will regret not striking a deal with us for help."
"Why can't you two just tell us what happens if it is so bad then?" I asked, finally speaking up.
Isadora held her hand up to silence Anthony, who was probably going to make an obnoxious comment about my new glasses or about how I was new to this world, "It's a vampire's curse for taking souls. When they take a soul, they see the life the person was supposed to live. They can see the future as their sucking out the life, but they cannot tell another creature about what they saw. They are only to speak about it amongst other vampires."
"So, my deal." Nat persisted.
Calum rolled his red eyes, "We will not take your deal. Your deals have twists and I won't have that in my family."
"Your family?" Lanx scoffed and Calum's eyes glowered.
"Yes, he does not want any of you soul sucking bats in our home. We do not want any of you intervening with our family. Don't try contacting my brother again." I sat still and hoped that no matter what happened, I was always on Isadora's side.
Lanx sat up straight and narrowed his blue eyes at Isadora, "I can kill you with a flick of my wrist."
Isadora let out laugh that sounded more intimidating than cheerful, "Anything can. I'm a scire. A pencil could kill me if a blaney used enough force. But you," she pointed her finger at Lanx and leaned into his face, daring him to turn away. With one quick reach into her backpack Isadora pulled out her lipstick and set it on the table, taking the top off. "You have to be killed with doses of cosmos sulphureus. Any touch and it's deadly." She leaned in towards Lanx and glanced down at her lipstick. She grabbed the small tube and uncapped it, awaiting a response from Lanx. The lipstick had very few colors, most of it was clear but there were small pieces of an orange flower melted down.
Lanx sat back in his chair, keeping away from Isadora. "I don't want a deal if it comes with your empty threats. Go back home. Remember that I carry this on me and maybe next time we can have a civilized conversation." Isadora said.
As the pair got up to leave, the whole crew followed them out. It never occurred to me that everyone at Mount Crest could be part of a villain side group. I just assumed it was a bunch of rich white kids that didn't know better. Little did I know, I wasn't the one who knew better. They weren't just rich white kids, they were vampires. They were soul-sucking monsters that could see the future.
"What's the blood moon?" Eden asked, finally speaking up.
"Well, you know how in the movies werewolves go full wolf on a full moon? The blood moon is like that, but for everyone. It's the one time that everyone's powers are at their strongest. But it's also a time where we are also the most vulnerable. The blood moon is said to bring death and destruction for creatures. For blanies it's a sight to see, but for us it's a danger. We need to be extra careful that night." Isadora said.
"It's just a superstition," Calum said. But Isadora shook her head, not budging on the idea.
"It's not, and if you can help it then stay inside that night." Isadora said. "The blood moon isn't something to take lightly and since you are new creatures and we are still unsure of what you are, it might hit you harder than we can expect. I don't go out on blood moons and now neither should you."
