The Morning After

Neither of us took the potion, or the vile, whatever you want to call it really. When I woke up, I sat on the edge of my mattress on the floor. Last night Eden didn't really want to go home, it was late and he just found out that monsters were real -walking at night didn't seem like the best idea. So he slept over at my house, well it doesn't even look like he slept -he was on his phone researching and his usual green eyes were droopy. Eden and I couldn't figure out what to say to each other, there's nothing you can say really. Not when you have been ordinary your whole life only to find out that you're much more. Eden sat down on the edge of the bed and looked down at me. He tossed his phone and stared out the window, as if waiting for another monster.

I looked down at the phone, he showed me his notes.

MONSTERS:

Cheshire Cat:

*Call them by whistling a tune *Growls sound like thunder. *saliva creates second degree burns (baby cats) *An overwhelming smell of lilies seems that will cause you to faint *peruco (purple) heals the second degree burns and rashes created by the saliva. It's thick, similar to honey. You need to chug it in order for it to work. (baby cats) *usually has something valuable *saliva can create literal holes in your skin (grown cats) *develops hypnosis and drives blanies insane (grown cats) *captures the soul of its prey and forces the prey to do its bidding, even murder * fight to the death

Chandelier Mirror:

*swings at the edge of the chandelier *takes intruder's souls for questioning *security alarm to the extreme *painful until you get back then you're fine *turns into a black mist *hard to look away from it

Blood suckers:

* get blood donations from the bank *can be a lacrosse team captain

Scires:

*know practically everything *can fight monsters *call them by sitting in front of a mirror and putting an offering in front of it * weighs your problem and your value of offering and decides if you're worth their time *can make healing potions

I tossed the phone back at Eden. Of course he wrote down everything we encountered yesterday, he was always the one between us that seemed to have his life together. He was always the one that was prepared and I'm not surprised if he actually wrote this all down in a notebook just to have double protection and make sure that we didn't lose the first piece of notes. He waited to see my reaction and I simply nodded, what else could I have done? He wrote down a bunch of monsters on his phone notes. Monsters. My nose scrunched up in confusion, Isadora and Calum weren't monsters. Calum was just fine, he looked fine all the time actually. He didn't want to kill anyone at school or suck anyone's blood.

"You put Isadora and Calum there." I said simply. Maybe he didn't mean it that way, of course he didn't. Isadora and Calum were harmless, well Calum was. Isadora can kill anything with a slash of her sword and a dirty look. Eden didn't say anything in response, he just sat there. He looked down at his phone and shrugged, clearly not understanding what I meant. "They aren't monsters." I said in response.

He, again, said nothing in response. I had a moment of doubt, maybe we should have drank the potion. I mean, we have known Calum for a while. Every bit of my high school lacrosse career actually and we hated him -well I did. But he isn't a monster. If Eden considered everyone a monster now then it was useless, if he was going to see the world as a negative place filled with negative things then maybe it is better that he should've taken the potion.

My mind wandered to the different kind of monsters that existed, the different kind of powers that existed. What if I ended up like Calum? What if I ended up with some sort of ability that Eden considered to be under the 'monster' notes. If that was me in the same place as Calum, would my best friend take notes about me, would he not care if someone tried to tell him that I was harmless and that he had known me his whole life so putting me there was pointless. I wiped the thought out of my mind, I didn't want to believe that he'd do that. I didn't want to believe that my best friend could effortlessly label me as a monster.

Eden shrugged it off and set the phone down on the bed. He walked out of bed and strolled into the restroom. I figured that was my cue to get ready. We might have discovered that cheshire cats exist and that there are monsters in the real world but there were also Chemistry tests in the real world. Chemistry tests that I was doomed to fail considering I went out and creepily followed my neighbor last night instead of studying. But let's be honest here, even if I didn't follow Isadora I still wouldn't have studied.

On our way out Eden got stuck talking to my dad, something about demigods. Oddly enough, Eden talks a lot more to my dad than he does with his. Something in his dad switched a couple years ago and things have never been the same. There was a reason -an obvious reason. But Eden didn't like to talk about it. A couple of years ago Eden's sister went missing. She was two years older than us and disappeared when we barely starting middle school but the pain never faded for Eden. Sometimes I catch him with a far out look, his eyes focusing on one object and I know he's thinking about his sister.

I stared at the house across the street -Isadora's house and Eden's ex house. The house in which his sister disappeared from and the house in which she never returned to.

"Hi, I'm looking for my cat." The sound of Isadora's voice woke me out of my trance. My eyes were torn away from the house and in her direction, half of her hair was up in braids today and I couldn't help but notice the necklace that hung from her neck. It resembled a wave and I couldn't help but wonder if she took that from a cheshire cat too.

"Did you let him out last night?" I asked, remembering the black cat that wandered around her makeshift home.

Isadora raised her eyebrows in response, "So you didn't drink the vial then."

"No. Neither of us did," I shook my head in response. "But do you usually let him out?"

She chuckled, "I'm not looking for my cat Carlisle."

The sound of my front door closing made us both turn to look. Eden trudged out of the house, barely putting his backpack on his shoulders. Upon seeing Isadora Eden stood still at the gate.

"Morning Ginger," Isadora said and all she got was a nod in response. Eden approached the both of us and cleared his throat. I suddenly felt very uncomfortable with the both of them here. Ever since last night Eden hasn't been the usual chatty Kathy and with Isadora around, I wouldn't really be able to ask him why.

"I'm going to take the long route to school," Eden said while avoiding eye contact. "I'll see you at lunch, yeah?"

Too stumped to say anything, I shrugged in response. And as we watched Eden walk away from us Isadora stepped closer to me. Her head tilted as Eden got further away, probably wondering the same thing that I did.

"Is he always that stand offish in front of pretty girls?" She asked. I shook my head, not processing what she said.

"You think you're pretty?" I asked with an eyebrow raised.

Isadora scoffed, "Oh I know I am." She nodded her head in the opposite direction of Eden and I took her gesture. Guess I wouldn't be walking alone to school after all.
