Mae

I turned out of bed and sat up. The bed was soft with blue blankets sprawled over the sides. A picture hung blankly across the dark window. It was too dark to see anything, but I still felt the cold stare of the moon upon me. I got up to close the blinds. The air around me was noticeably softer than usual. I stopped in the center of the room and turned around a moment, then stopped. I came to the realisation that this was not my room.

A bright light from beyond the door caught my eye, followed by a thud. The sudden burst in brightness blinded me. I stumbled backward and into something. The surface was freezing and shifted down my spine like sand. I jumped back up straight and tried to focus my gaze. I found my way to the door, skipping over the knob a few times before slowly cracking it open. The living room was well lit with a white carpet. A dog sat across the room wagging its tail at me. The dog was small, with short black hair. Around its neck was a red leather collar with a golden heart swinging from it. It barked at me once before running into the next room. I sped past the dinning table to follow it.

I turned into what looked like a kitchen and instantly focused on the man at the counter. He had black hair and brown eyes that were visible through his glasses. He wore a black shirt, with a red heart bearing into the left sleeve. He knelt down to pet the dog, before looking back up to me.

"Well hi there." He said standing up to greet me, he was surprisingly short.

"Who the frick are you, and why are you in the kitchen?"

"I could ask the same to you." He said before swinging his wrist around. On his wrist was a red watch which he used to check the time.

"It's still early." He said to himself. "But time flies when your asleep. Ready to go?" He looked down at his dog, who barked in approval.

"I didn't realise I was dreaming." I said curiously.

"Yup your dreaming and I'm dreaming."

"That can't be right how are you..."

The dog barked annoyingly and circled a spot next to him. I stared, unsure weather the dog was trying to say something or not.

"Ok, fine..." He said, then turned to me. "Ready to go?"

"Wait what? where are we going? Who are you?"

"I'm Mark and your Mae..."

"How did you know my..."

"...I've been taken here to pick you up because this..." taps watch, " ...leads me to people who care or are in trouble. Like you."

"What trouble? We're in the kitchen."

"Like I said not everyone's in trouble. But i'm picking you up so you can help me save people who are."

"But what are we fighting? I don't understand."

His dog growled and scratched the floor. Mark checked his watch again, tapping his foot from tile to tile.

"Look your gonna have to trust me."

He glanced around the kitchen once more before turning back to me.

"Ready to go." He said sticking out his hand.

My mother had always told me not to listen to strangers. In fact she told me that if anyone ever tried to lead me somewhere that I should kick their shins and run the other way. I shrugged. If this was a dream then nothing could really happen. Something about him just lead me to trust him. I looked up to the man who waited patiently for a response and cautiously shook his hand. I felt a strange shock go up my arm, and a blue neon line started circling around us. Blue light shot from the floor and blocked us from the rest of the room. The floor slowly fading to white, then to red.
