Daniel, with shaky hands, holds the pay phone to his ear, waiting, hoping for an answer. The cold barrel of Reva's gun sends sweat down his face. He never expected to be in this situation. She gave him one call. Either he could take sides with Reva or he could take sides with Patsy.
Jasmine answers the phone with panic in her voice as clear as the terror pounding through his heart. "Daniel?" She asked frantically.
The clear distress caught him off guard and made him worry, but he decided not to let it bother him.
"Hey, guess I don't need to ask if you remember me? I thought I'd check in with you. How are things?" Daniel asks as casually as his contained fear allows.
"You know, getting by?" She asks, unsure of her answer. She sounded like a dark veil over a deeper truth. Something isn't quite clear though. Why is she nervous?
"Remember that girl from our history class, last year of high school? What was her name?" Daniel asks with a certain measure of anxiety and hopefulness. If it wasn't her, then he would have no connection to her, no way to find her.
He waits a long while, but yet Jasmine won't reply. Silence and sweat is all he gets as he waits on the line. Until, buzz.. She hangs up.
That's all the proof he needs. It must be her. The same girl. The girl who stayed after school to study in the library. The girl who seemed to always follow Daniel. It has to be Patsy.
Daniel holds the phone for a few minutes. Listening to the bare hum of nothingness. He holds it tight to his ear, not saying a word. Soon enough, Reva catches onto the fact that the call must have ended.
As she takes him back to the floating futuristic car at gunpoint, Daniel notices the ferocity in her blue eyes. She cuffs him to the car door again, then takes a seat next to him. Her back so stiff she can't be comfortable. It's impossible.
"So, what'll it be? The easy way, or the hard way?"Reva asks, tapping her gun against the steering wheel.
"190 Gardner Road, that's where she is. That's where Patsy is."
The engine hums and they lift off the ground gently.
Reva throws her gun into the back seat. "You made the right choice boy."
