CHAPTER 5

THE BLACK FLAG

Once we are home Anna runs a hot bath for me and I change into some clean, warm clothes afterwards, thinking only about what I had seen while drowning... The images play over and over in my head... and then it hits me. I had seen this happening before. I had dreamed of drowning and the face of Jack Sparrow rescuing me from the depths.

This isn't good... Whatever I had seen... Does this mean the woman I had spoken to was right? Can I indeed see the future? That frightens me. Whatever is going to happen, if she was right, it will happen tonight. But what could I do? Is everyone in danger? I know that if my visions are true then Norrington is at risk...

I think through this as I lie on my bed... But without notice I fall asleep.

I open my eyes when I hear a large boom outside. The darkness fills my room. Did I sleep until nightfall?

I look at the open doorway across the room and spring to my feet. I run to it, pressing my hands against the wooden frame. The house is empty... And completely silent. I breathe and hear another boom, farther away. It sounds like canon fire.

I run back to the balcony doors and throw them open, walking into the moonlight and looking down at the fort that is being shot at by canons, from a ship with black sails at the harbor, flashes of orange and sounds of bombs filling the air. I look down at the medallion around my neck, for some reason I know that the reason that the Black Pearl is here is for this.

I see women, men, and children running and screaming, being slaughtered by undead pirates, staining the cobblestone and dirt with blood.

They get shot left and right. I cry out but there is nothing... Nothing I can do.

I hear something behind me and I turn around.

I see Will lying against the edge of a dirty ship, seaweed covered deck.

The captain with a face of a strange sea creature perhaps, though still humanoid, has a beard of russet tentacles and barnacle covered captain's hat.

He pulls up the sword that Will had made for James, and he plunges it into his chest, a painful cry from William and a gasp from me.

"Will!" I call out. "Will!"

But they cannot hear me. I run over to him and kneel down, as he chokes on the air he breathes.

He looks at me. And when his eyes lock with mine I have already melted in my own sorrow.

But as he stares I see the life leave his big brown eyes. Tears begin to run down my dirty cheeks. "...Will," I breathe and touch my hand to his cheek... But soon I don't feel skin... I feel fabric... His face fades away and sheets appear.

I frown and gasp, sitting up on my bed with heavy, repetitive breath. I look about my room, the curtains blowing in the wind in front of the open balcony doors... It's just after sunset...

I leap off my bed and run over to the open doorway, stopping when my palms reach the railing.

The bay is clear, peaceful. But not for long... This is it. I need to act. The pirates are coming soon and the whole port is in danger... Will... I can't let what happened to him in my nightmares happen in real life.

"My lady?" Victoria asks and I turn around.

She looks concerned, as my expression says worry.

"You missed dinner, miss. Though I can cook it a bit for fresh if you like."

"No that's alright. Where's father?" I walk past her and to my vanity.

"He's at the fort, my lady. With the commodore."
