Mind Reading

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late update. I'm procrastinating on my homework right now and writing, so that's fun! The song above is The Room Where It Happens from Hamilton- it's awesome. This one-shot is based on this writing prompt from Pinterest. "One day in class you decide to scream something in your head to catch mind readers. As you do, you see your crush flinch." The credit for the prompt goes to writing.prompt.s on Instagram, and the characters belong to Rick Riordan. By the way, this isn't my best written one-shot, but its all right, at best. I kind of rushed on it lol, cause I have homework. Anyway, that was a super long A/N, so let's get to it. Please enjoy!

"We clearly have to review how to find an inverse function," my math teacher droned on. "Determine there is a function..."

Instead of listening to her boring lecture, I picked up my pen and began to doodle on an empty page in my math binder. My teacher's lessons could get more boring than History of Magic classes at Hogwarts. I noticed that many of my classmates had dozed off, or were whispering to one another.

I lazily turned my head, stealing a glance at my crush, Nico di Angelo. He had his headphones on and was slowly nodding along to the music blaring out of them. His eyes were closed, and he paused every so often to brush a stray lock of his jet- black hair out of his face.

I'd been in love with him for the past year. My friends, Percy and Jason, had even come up with a ship name for us: Solangelo. Still, I hadn't asked him out yet, since I barely knew him. I'd stalked him for the past year, but hadn't spoken to him.

I put thoughts of Nico out of my mind, knowing that this kind of unrequited love was unhealthy. Pulling my phone out, I began to scroll through Pinterest. I passed through endless memes and pictures of cute animals until I saw something that caught my eye.

"MIND READING IS REAL!" it claimed, shouting its message in all caps. "TEST IT OUT BY SCREAMING SOMETHING IN YOUR HEAD... WAIT AND SEE WHO FLINCHES!!!"

I silently laughed in my head as I reread the ridiculous message. Pinterest could have the weirdest stuff on it sometimes. I looked back at my teacher, who was still explaining inverse functions, which we had already learned last year. More students were outright sleeping, leaving the teacher undeterred as she continued to teach.

What the hell, I thought. This was stupid. Mind reading wasn't real, but yelling something in your head is fun. If someone flinches, that would be weird, but also amazing. I was overthinking this: like I did for everything else. Closing my notebook, I thought of something to say.

"ON THE OUTSIDE ALWAYS LOOKING IN," I thought as loudly as I could. Chuckling to myself, I realized how strange it was to scream in your head. "WILL I EVER BE MORE THAN I'VE ALWAYS BEEN?"

"CAUSE I'M TAP TAP TAPPING ON THE GLASS," I looked around the classroom to see if anyone flinched. My eyes traveled to Nico, who had made a sudden motion when I started singing the lyrics to Waving Through A Window in my head. Still, it could have just been a coincidence "I'M WAVING THROUGH A WINDOW!"

I kept my eyes on Nico as I belted one of the best songs on the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack. He noticeably flinched, and I kept my mouth clamped shut to hold in a gasp of surprise. The Pinterest trick had worked! Nico was a mind reader! The information weighed on my mind for the rest of the class period. I had to tell Percy and Jason about this.

I sat at the lunch table, tapping my foot impatiently as I waited for Percy and Jason to arrive. They both had English class on the other side of the school, making them both constantly late for lunch. Normally I didn't mind, but today I was going crazy with the anticipation of my crush being a mind reader.
