Leshis.. I'll admit, I knew about the creatures before they turned up in the Witcher series. Leshis were a race in Dungeons and Dragons, of which I am a fervent player. Though they don't have D&D in Varismalia, they do have a role playing game called Adventurer's of Maldoon, which is similar enough.. only all the races in the game are real..
(I suspect that the creators of the game weren't racist, cause they made demons one of the races in the game, and their abilities are lit as heck)
From what I gathered about the Leshy, from information in my world's literature.. they were Forest Spirits, protectors of nature, known particularly for summoning and controlling wolves in many of their reincarnations throughout media.. a deity of sorts in Slavic Mythology.
In Varismalia though, the real Leshi wasn't too different, yet it was different at the same time. Sometimes I wonder if the writer of Witcher visited this world at some point, because his description of his version "the Leshen" which controls birds, is quite accurate too.
Here's the difference between your Witcher Leshen/ myth Leshy and the Leshi in this world aside from name spelling differences.
First of all, Leshies are indeed gods. Minor gods though that don't stand on the same plane of existence as guys like Paz, and therefore, they don't need to lower their deity or power to enter the mortal planes like Paz did.
During Varismalia's Age of Gods (which I know next to nothing about cause I barely pay attention in Mythology Class) Gods were capable of using their full power on the mortal plane.. till some incident happened that resulted in them having to become less powerful to walk among us. Granted, they were still extremely powerful.. just not op enough to obliterate mankind with a snap of their fingers.
But some gods just start out minorly powerful, so they can walk between planes at the same maximum overdrive they always are.. and Leshy's are one of these gods. More ancient than Elves and Demons, and more cunning than Imps and the Serpentine Race.
Secondly, a Leshy is not inherently evil.. unlike the ones we know from Witcher. They, like any other humanoid race, are free to choose whatever side they want to be on.. though they tend to be either neutral, or, if under the service of Freyalvia and her family, like her father Svyat, the King of the Ancient Wood, and the supposed Patron of the Leshies.
Thirdly, Leshies are not a completely unique race, they are actually part of the Ent Genus, if my good grades in Crypto-biology back at the Academy are to be believed. Ents being basically tree people. Entella Leshinetius is the full name, don't look up the latin or whatever, it's pure Varismalian Elven language that's used for the name translating, which translates to Tree Shepherd, Wood Gaurdian.
Now was I thinking about all this when my first genuine Leshy encounter was coming at me and trying to kill me? The answer might surprise you.. I am what I like to call.. an S Class Nerd.
"CAN WE GET A PICTURE OF THIS!?" I squealed excitedly as packs of wolves began to run at us.. snarling viciously. "Can we.. CAN WE!?"
"WHAT KIND OF KNIGHT ARE YOU!?" Kassandra screamed.
"COME ON!! THIS MY FIRST LESHEN!!" I squealed.
"Leshy!!" Kassandra corrected. "I would rather live than die to indulge your fantasies! DO YOUR JOB AND FIGHT IT!!"
"Okay okay!" I said. "Gonna have to store this in Mira's special memory vault for good! Store it Melia! Store it in my mind!"
"That's not how Shared Mind Link works Mira.." said Melia.
