My Life Was Great... Until It Wasn't

I lie on my bed at the Garrison, knowing today is test day. I can't go back to sleep, and I know that the 'Rise and Shine' alarm will go off any time now. My team - Hunk, Lance, and Pidge - will probably fluke up the flight exam. That would be about right since they can't get along worth a darn. There have been many times that I could have slugged them for their imbecile behavior.

The 'Rise and Shine' alarm blares over the speakers. I sigh and pull off the covers. Another stressful day lies ahead, and I don't want to make it worse by being late. I quickly change into my Garrison uniform and leave to wake my team, who are probably still asleep. I stop at Pidge's door, knocking lightly. "Pidge?" The door slides open. Pidge had fallen asleep at her computer. Again.

Pidge and I didn't know each other very well at the beginning of the year, but eventually, I grew rather fond of the young techie and her likewise. She had confided her identity with me, saying that I was the most trustworthy person she'd ever met.

"Pidge?" I whisper. "Pidge..." Pidge doesn't stir. "OMIGOSHPIDGEWAKEUPWE'REGOINGTOBELATEFOREXAMS!!"

Pidge screams. Sometimes that was the only way to wake her up. Sheesh, when she sleeps, she's a sound sleeper.

Pidge jumps out of bed, throws on her uniform, and stands before me in a salute. "Commander Iverson, my apologies!"

"Pidge," I begin warmly, "it's just me."

"Oh." She blushes. "I'm definitely not awake," she says, yawning large enough to catch horseflies.

"We'd better wake the boys if we're going to be on time." I walk out of her room and down the hall to the boys' rooms. I knock on Hunk's door, and it slides open. He's already up and dressed. "You ready?"

"Can we get breakfast first?" he asks.

"We might snag a doughnut before class if we hurry."

"Let's go."

Hunk and I walk further down the hall to Lance's room. I put a finger to my lips, messaging him to be silent.

I push open Lance's door and spy him still sleeping, with a mask over his eyes and face cream slathered all over his skin. I snicker. Tiptoeing up to him, I draw patterns in the face cream and finally wake him up.

"Huh? What?"

"Get up, Lance! We'll be late!"

"Exams can wait."

Hunk looks peeved at him. "Yeah, but doughnuts can't."

"You can go ahead, Hunk, if you want. I can wrangle the sleepy-head."

"You sure?" I nod my head in reply.

"Okay..." Hunk says hesitantly, but he walks off towards the cafeteria anyway.

"Oh, Laaaaaaannce... What if I told you someone drew on your face? Would you get up then?"

"WHAT?!" Lance immediately rushes out of bed to his bathroom mirror, inspecting the doodles in the face cream. "(Y/N)!!!"

"What? It got you up. Get dressed, slowpoke. The others are waiting for us and we'll be late if you don't hurry the frick up!" I leave his room and make my way to the cafeteria.

Lance comes running up behind me and jumps on my back. I dodge, and he faceplants on the floor.

"Ow... You're mean."

"I'm not mean. I'm nean."

Lance gets off the floor. "What kinda word is that?"

"Nice and mean rolled into one," I explain, rolling my eyes. "Elementary, my dear. But to prove I'm more nice than mean..." I grab Lance by the arm and throw him over my shoulder. I march to the cafeteria, earning strange looks from the other students at the sight of me carrying a teenage boy over my shoulder.
