"Beverly?" Morticia had asked the young teen as they set the red roses in a vase with water.

"Yes?" The red head replied absentmindedly, focusing her attention on making the rest of the kitchen seem presentable.

"Have you enjoyed the time you've spent here?" Morticia had asked with such a casual nature that Beverly had to stop what she was doing and look in her direction. Beverly hoped that Morticia's facial expression would provide further context, but this was a lost cause since the older woman's back was to her.

Beverly did not expect such a question--the atmosphere had been so tense during the last few days due to the severity of their situation, so she figured that all anyone had the capacity to think about was their constant worry and possible outcomes of the inspection. However, Beverly did not need to use much mental or emotional power to answer.

"Of course," She stated, not knowing where the conversation was going.

"Do you sincerely want to be here, with us? I know our family can be strange at times, and it can be overwhelming, but before today, before this inspection occurs, I need to know. Honestly, do you want to stay with us, not because you feel that you owe us a debt for taking you in, but because that is what you want?" Morticia elaborated, turning around to fully face the teen in order to create a more intimate conversation.

Beverly had been surprised to hear Morticia say such a thing, not due to the fact that it wasn't a valid question, but rather that she had never received that extent of concern for her opinion from an adult. No one had ever asked what she wanted, they never treated her as an individual who held their own beliefs, but instead as a naïve child who needed decisions made for them. With this family, the Addams family, it was entirely different. She had never felt so free to express herself, which was wildly new and refreshing. Her sarcasm was seen as humor, not disrespect. Her choice of clothing was seen as expressing her individuality, not promiscuous. And most importantly, Beverly was seen as what she was--a teenager who was trying to find her place in the world--not a lost, fragile girl that was suffering from a traumatic childhood.
