Chapter 17

As usual I woke up to my alarm, change into a usual outfit, ate breakfast, put my one piece on; sunscreen, sunglasses etc. But things were different, I wasn't with Jesse, but instead I was back living in my apartment. I put my lifeguard shirt on shrugging the thought off. I got in my car and drove to Bondi for my second day as a trainee.

When I got there I went straight to the tower because I already had my bathing suit and lifeguard shirt on.

I walked through the back door, "Hey guys." I turned the corner and saw him.. I saw Jesse Pollock. I turned around, "I'll put the flags up!" I said and I walked out the door.

Jesse's P.O.V

"Hey guys." I heard Vanessa voice by the medical bed. She took one look at me and turned away, "I'll put the flags up!" She called then she walked out the door. Oh come on..

"What was that all about?" Beardy asked with a confused look as he turned in his chair to look at me. "Aren't you guys together?"

"It's complicated."

Vanessa's P.O.V

I was done putting the flags and signs up with Deano's help with fining the rips, then we went back to the tower.

As I walked up the stairs Whippet came out the door and spotted me, "Oh hey Vanessa!"

"Hey Whip." I smiled

"Wanna patrol the south end with me?" He asked while a bright smile,

"Sure why not?"

"Great! I'm drive'n!"

I laughed, "Okay Whippet," I smiled as I shook my head, when he jumped in the buggy.

I got in the passenger seat, then he started the rhino and drove to the South end, the most dangerous place for swimmers.

"Are you always this cheery in the morning?" I asked as we drove to the South end.

"Well I'm used to getting up this early, actually I get up earlier to take a jog around the block."

"How!" I asked knowing that I couldn't jog before the crack ass of dawn.

He parked the Rhino, "I don't know. Jogging just gives me energy."

"Damn! Man if I jogged before the ass crack of dawn I would pass out before I could pass five houses!" Whippet started laughing. "Well it's true! And when... well if I get to work I'll be the opposite of cheery." This only made Whippet laugh even harder as he held his stomach. "What?" I asked, now his contagious laugh got to me as I joined in on his laugher. This is going to be a fun day.

That's what I thought..

"Hey Nessa," I looked up to see Harrison with his lunch in hand.

"Hey." I smiled weakly, He sat down beside me and rested his back on the Lifeguard Tower like I did.

"I see you've decided not to eat lunch at your lunch break either. You and I have the same idea, to patrol the beach on our lunch breaks to get extra brownie points from Hoppo then eat our lunch after the day is done. But of coarse have some snack in between."

I gave him a little smile, "Yeah.."

"What's wrong?"

"I- nothing.." I looked down at my sandwich that I held as I set it down on its rapper that was on my crossed legs.

"Ness, you know you can tell me anything." I looked up at him and smiled weakly.

I sighed again, "I broke up with Jess... The look he gave me.. that sad teary look.." I looked down at my sandwich with glassy eyes. "I was going to move in with him..." a tear dropped onto the dry sand, "What have I done..." I whispered to myself. It's never just one tear, when one tear comes another follows until your eyes have no more tears to cry, and that exactly what happened. Harrison pulled me into a hug and just held me as I cried on his chest.

"Vanessa?" My tears stopped and my breath hitched. Harrison and I let go of each other, I shot around to see a pissed off Jesse.

"Jess it's not what it looks like.."

"It looks to me that you already moved on." He said angrily he turned to walk away. Some lifeguards watched the scene unfold not knowing what was going on.

"No Jess!" I quickly got up and ran to grab his arm, and when I grabbed his arm he quickly pulled his arm out of my grip.

"I should've saw this coming.." he hissed under his breath.

"No Jess..." fresh tears welted in my eyes

"Looks like we're really done.." Jesse said as he looked over his shoulder then walked away.

And in that moment I realize that Jesse Pollock has walked out of my life and is never coming back.

I dropped to my knees feeling like my heart has stopped in my chest, I grabbed a fistful of my shirt where my aching heart lay feeling like all it left me was a searing pain.

I cried as I held the fistful of my shirt, just rocking back and forth.

Harrison sat beside me, "Come here Ness." He opens his arms letting me in his embrace.

I leaned on his chest and he hugged while he slowly rocked me side to side, "He's never coming back..." I shut my eyes tight now grabbing a fistful of Harrison shirt. "Jesse Pollock is never coming back..." I hiccuped for air as I cried, feeling hot tears run down my cheek.

Harrison rubbed soothing circles on my back, "He'll come back I know it." He kissed the top of my head.
