"You know," Ty began, breaking the comfortable quiet we had with nothing but the waves.
"I never apologised for yelling the other day when you told me about... all this," he waved his arms. I knew what he meant.
I dared to break the touch barrier again, resting a hand lightly on his arm, "Ty, I threw up on you. We're even," And I laughed and he laughed and I knew then that this was more than a stupid crush. Nothing else had made me feel this weightless.
It was orange, the light of the sun was beginning to level with the ocean. "The sunset is so beautiful," Ty mused. I agreed quietly, basking in the glory of the view.
"Not as beautiful as you, though," He said, not breaking his gaze from the water. As if he were too nervous that it would go wrong. I watched him draw lines in the sand with his index finger.
I smiled, not sweetly but sarcastically instead, "Did you just set up your own line?" I giggled.
His head drooped and he turned to me, "Maybe," He shook his head, "Worth a shot, right?"
"You are so not cool," I teased, playfully pushing his shoulder. There was sand spilled across his shirt from the way he'd been lying on the blanket as we'd looked for shapes in the clouds.
"Okay I take it back, the sunset is way more beautiful than you," He shrugged.
"I didn't say you were wrong," I flicked my hair, a shower of sand came out. For some reason we both found that hilarious and soon he had rolled over so that he was leaning over me.
He'd smiled so much today that when he stopped, the wrinkles lingered around his broad lips. I watched him bite his lower lip for a second (noting that we had the same habit) before he went in for another kiss.
This wasn't as long but I still savoured every second his soft lips were in contact with mine. He ran his tongue along the front of my lips, the shock made me arch my body into his.
After that, the bliss ended, "Sorry," he mumbled. Forever apologising, Ty could do with a bit more confidence, I thought.
"Time to go, I think," I checked the time on my phone, "Shit, my dad said be home by ten. It's nine fifty five," I shoved my phone in my back pocket and scrambled for my Vans.
Ty caught onto my urgency and starting throwing our leftovers into the bag pack. He was rolling up the blanket as I was fumbling up the rocks.
However my speed didn't do any good for me as I snagged my calf on a spiked bit of the cliff. I gasped at the pain of it and quickly threw myself up to the path.
I curled my right leg in as I tentatively examined the gash in my left it was a good four inches long and maybe half an inch wide and stinging like crazy. I rubbed the sides of the gap in my skin in an attempt to dull the pain.
That's when the blood came.
I screamed. I twisted my back so I couldn't see any red but I could still feel the hot liquid running down my leg, "Oh my god, Ty!" I called.
He appeared from the cliff, ghost white and panicked. "What? What?" He dove to the side of me.
I pointed to my leg like it was ready to fall off and cringed at how irrational I was being. "I can't do blood, I can't, I can't-" I was breathing heavily.
"Okay, it's okay," Ty squeezed my shoulder. He didn't do the typical movie thing and rip his shirt off, slightly disappointing with hindsight, but instead he pulled the blanket out of the bag, and then the food and then surprisingly - a bandage.
I don't know what happened next because when I tried to follow his movements to my legI almost passed out.
"Breathe Alyssa," I was instructed, "With me: in, two, three. Now out, two, three." His voice was calming. I immersered myself in it. The way he was dragging out his vowels and the soft 't's were soothing and gentle.
"Done!" Ty relieved me of my panic, gently yet still excitingly. Tentatively, I glanced at my leg. Nothing. You couldn't see any of the blood. "Ty," I sighed, "You are my flipping hero."
I wanted to hug him, clutch him and not let go but I couldn't because he was holding my leg at a forty five degree angle to the ground like any good paramedic would.
I caught my breath for a few more moments before meekly producing a thank you. "Sorry, I'm so sorry I freaked out like that, I just- you-" I stopped. I was supposed to be the eloquent one. "Thank you," I smiled at him. I was going to have to buy him something to return the favour.
"It's okay," He smiled comfortingly, "but you aren't walking home on that."
I agreed, my stomach still churned away and the thought of the blood oozing from my leg. I jokingly replied, "What, are you going to carry me then?"
I saw his smile falter for a second as he thought about it, then a laugh as herelaxed.
"Can you get a lift?" He asked, and for the first time I thought about how my friends here were different. No 24 hour chauffeur on call, no private doctor that would come out immediately to stitch me up, no chef to whip up a feel-better desert.
"Yes, I'll phone Harry." As I always did, "He'll drive you back too. No protests," I smiled.
Ty dragged over a rock for me to put my leg up on so that he could drop it and then we sat in satisfied silence, just looking into the sunset.
The amber glow engulfed us. I turned my head to watch Ty, how his lips rested naturally in a small put and how he had some curled baby hair at the nape of his neck.
The wind picked up and a small shiver ran down my spine. It was getting cold.
I still wish we could have walked home.
Long time no see lads, well hopefully the hardest part of my school year is coming to a close and I'll be able to get the updated every week!
Thanks as always ~twr
