Chapter Two!

I was camuflaged in a tree, listening to what Runaan and another Moonshadow Elf were saying. Some would say I was eavesdropping, I would say that I was listening for a friend who wanted to know what they were talking about.

"They'll be on the lookout for us now," Runaan was saying.

"Five of us won't be enough," the other one said. "We need all six."

"We'll be stronger as five," Runaan said.

I jumped down from the tree softly and walked over to Rayla, still camuflaged.

All the other elves were preparing for battle, but Rayla was just sitting there looking sad.

I wanted to comfort her but if I said anything I would get caught.

Rayla looked over at the other elves, and the one pouring green liquid on their blade glared at her.

"Hey..." Rayla said. "Could I borrow...your sharpener thingy?"

"Wetstone," the elf said gruffly.

"Yeah, that," Rayla said.

"No," the elf said colding, going back to sharpening his blade.

Runaan and the other elf jumped down from the tree.

"Come with me," Runaan said to Rayla.

Rayla stood up and followed Runaan into the woods.

I followed them.

"I thought you could do it Rayla," Runaan said. "But I was wrong."

"You're not wrong," Rayla said. "I can do it."

"I know you've never taken before," Runaan said. "I brought you because you're talented. Maybe the fastest and strongest of any of us."

Of Moonshadow Elves you mean, I thought. I'm way faster than Rayla.

"But it takes more than that," Runaan said. "There's an instinct, a moment of truth. And in that moment, you hesitate."

Runaan stopped and turned to Rayla.

"I won't hesitate again," Rayla said.

"You will," Runaan said. "I see now that you're still just a child. Your heart isn't hard enough to go whatever it takes."

"I messed up," Rayla said. "I know I did. Because I let that human go, we're all in danger. But that's why you got to let me make it right!"

"No, it's too late for that," Runaan said.

"I bound myself," Rayla argued. "My heart, for Za-."

Rayla started to take her swords out but Runaan stopped her.

"You'll be unbound when the job is done!" Runaan said. "Your roll now is to stay out of the way. You will wait here quietly."

Runaan pointed to a rock.

Rayla sat down and looked up and Runaan.

"If we're not back by sunrise, go home," Runaan said as he walked away.

Rayla hung her head. I walked up to her and sat down on the rock too.

Rayla jumped a little.

"I'm the main reason why you don't like to kill people," I told her. "This is all my fault, I made you not want to kill."

Rayla looked up at the castle and then stood up. "I can fix this," she said.

She ran off towards the castle but I easily kept up with her.
