As soon as he confirmed that I needed braces, I just sighed and look around the room, anywhere else than looking at him.

"You know, McKenna, if you want, I could either put them on today or I can schedule an appointment for another day to put them on?" He offered, but honestly, I wanted to procrastinate getting braces now because I was starting to get super nervous about getting my braces, I mean, think of all the stuff I can't eat because they could ruin my braces.

"Do whatever." I mumbled under my breath, but I don't know if he heard me.

"Hey, I'm sure you're worried about getting braces, but they don't really hurt, and I'll be really gentle." He said trying to comfort me, but it wasn't working.

"You know, I had braces when I was your age." He said, well of course he did, his teeth are flawless.

He decided to continue his backstory, "I had them for 3 years before I had them taken off, and by what I'm seeing, if everything goes smoothly, yours should only take up to 2 years."

2 years, is a long time, I would be in my sophomore year of college before I would get them taken off. Now I definitely don't want them, but he still persisted.

"You could pick any color you want to, you can even make it rainbow colored, if you wanted." He offered, I mean the color thing did sound cool, but that's not going to help me make that decision.

Dr. Irwin just looked at me and sighed.

I feel bad for wasting his time.

Should I just get them. My teeth would look much better. Maybe my teeth would be as nice as his. I would also get to see him more.....maybe I'll just do it.

"I guess you can do it today." Which is when his face and smile brightened immediately as soon as I said it.

He started to rummage through the cabinets to get supplies and I tried to not let my nerves get the best of me.

He turned back around and began putting the supplies in his hands onto the little table beside the chair.

He smiled at me before putting his mask back on.

He took x-rays of my teeth before he decided to start. He mentioned something about before and after pictures.

"Open please." He said as he held something in his hands, which just made me give him a confused look.

He saw me staring and finally decided to speak up,

"Oh! This is a mouth prop. It'll help keep your mouth open if it gets tired."

I just slowly nod my head in response and cautiously opened my mouth.

He inserted the mouth prop and honestly, it was super weird but was useful, because earlier, I could feel my mouth getting tired after like 5 minutes.

I didn't necessarily pay attention to what he was doing and I didn't want to know, so I just got lost in his eyes.

My teeth began to feel this weird tugging and they eventually started to hurt.

I could tell he was about done.

He retracted his fingers and pulled out the mouth prop while starting to turn towards the cabinets.

"What color do you want?" He asked, but I just shrugged.

"Surprise me, I guess." I said to which he took a second to think about what color and grabbed one, but I didn't see which one, he made sure to keep it low enough for me to not see which one he picked.

He reinserted the mouth prop and continued his work, which apparently was, to make my mouth hurt even more.

5 minutes of hell later, he took everything out and begin to clean my mouth up and the mess he made.

He handed me a mirror, but I shook my head no and refused.

"What. Why. You should look.....I'll be offended if you don't look." He said in which I just rolled my eyes and took the stupid mirror.

I held the mirror in my hands and just looked at myself.

I'm not ready to brace myself for seeing my disgusting mouth, I already get enough shame for it anyways.

"Come on, I wanna see that beautiful smile." He encouraged, but what beautiful smile is he talking about, it's obviously not mine, mine is awful.

I didn't want to see my smile, but I did want to see my braces, so I decided to take a quick peek and made a little smirk.

I saw some of the braces, which made me just want to see the rest of it, so I ended up smiling. He decided to pick yellow, which was almost the shade of my teeth, but it actually made my teeth look whiter, which I don't mind.

"You wanna know why I picked that color?" He asked in which I just looked at him, handing back his mirror.

"Because I love your shirt and the band, so why not pick the title of one of their songs."

He was talking about Coldplay! He likes Coldplay! And he picked my braces color because of the song "Yellow"!

"Oh." I immediately became awkward.

"You like Coldplay too, huh?" I implied.

"I love Coldplay, hun."

Wow, that just made this orthodontist, so much hotter.
