◤ chapter one ◢

footsteps echoed through the empty house as the young man practically bolted up the stairs to his room. his heart beating rapidly, thoughts swarming his head at light speed, with his hands clutching a single piece of mail, as if it was the most important thing he had ever come into contact with. in this case, at this moment, it was.

months earlier, rowan rodriguze had sent out quite a few college applications. many had responded back; all postive of course. yet, none of them were the one that he really wanted to hear back from. until now. reaching his room in record time, the door behind him slammed shut. it was only then where the only sounds that were to be heard were his short breaths his nervousness had caught up to him.

the letter that he was holding onto, with an iron grip determined his future.

slowly the young man walked across his room, he sat down on the edge of the bed and slowly the tight grip he had on the paper gradually loosened.  "deep breaths" he spoke aloud to himself trying to calm his nerves.

that of course, was much easier said then done.

not only did this letter determine his future, but it also held a long-lasting dream of his. for as far as he could think back in his academic career, all he wanted was to be good enough to get accepted into this prestigious institution.
to say he didn't put sweat and tears into his school work—whatever was handed to him–was truly an understatement. he gave it his all, and it was all for this single moment that he was currently in.

rowan cleared his throat slightly and with trembling hands, he gingerly opened the piece of mail. the letter, wheater it had good or bad news inscribed on it was neatly folded. the creased lines matched up with one another perfectly keeping all of its known knowledge tucked inside itself. rowan admired it momentarily, almost not wanting to unfold the paper. that thought though vanished almost as quickly as it came, for the anticipation of knowing got the better it him.

still, with trembling hands, he undid the neat folding job and with brisk skimmings of the first couple of lines, his fate for the upcoming fall was bestowed upon him.

a sound that couldn't be identified was the first thing that came out of rowan's mouth and quickly that unidentified sound turned into shouts of pure and utter joy.

rowan had gotten accepted into yale.

he lept up from his previous spot on his bed, acceptance letter still in hand as first pumped the air around him. gleeful laughing spilled from his lips a feeling of euphoria washed over him, it was absolutely stunning.

rowan let out a content breath as he flopped down on his bed once more. he put the letter next to him, before resting his hands behind his head and looking up at the ceiling above. the young man could not have been happier! he was ecstatic to tell those around him the good news. all of his hard work had paid off and he couldn't wait to show everyone the outcome of it all.

letting out a second content breath that afternoon, rowan's eyes closed shut only to snap back open not a minute later. the young man sat upwards feeling around him for his phone. he had to tell them the good news! by them, he, of course, meant his four best friends; miles, chayse, lia, and finn.

the five of them had been friends for quite some time, meeting on the internet years back was a stoke of luck in rowan's book. despite the fact that, yes they resided in different parts of the country, but the group made it work! with daily texts on different social media platforms, weekly phone calls and video chats, and their annual meet ups that were scattered across the year; the five of them were as close to one another as any friendship could be.

there, of course, were times though that even the closest groups of friends became distant. for instance, when the end of the school year–or in finn's case of attending college end of the semester–rolled around. the text messages came at sporadic times, the video chat's and phone call's got rainchecks and so on and so forth. yet, they still made it work.

a ping coming from the young man's cell phone rang through bedroom just as he picked it up. it was from the group chat.
rowan unlocked his phone, opened the message and scanned the small devices screen reading over was sent out. if his smile could get any bigger it definitely would have.

his fingers quickly typed out a response, along with the good news he was given just minutes earlier. he chuckled to himself as he watched the message he had written out be delivered to the others.

the young man knew in his guts that this upcoming summer was definitely going to be one to remember.
