Medallions

"Can I see that book again?" I asked Leon remembering something that might be useful. 'Sure" he said pulling it out of one of his fanny packs and handing it to me. I flipped the pages to the status proving my theory right. The Lion statue in this book was in fact the same one that was just up the stairway.
"Be right back" I said dashing up the stairs and to the Lion. I moved the dials so they matched the notes. The latch holding the medallion moved and I stood on tippy toes to grab it.
I turned to go back down to Leon holding up the medallion proudly. "One down, two to go!" i said letting Leon take it. "Awesome, good job" he said smiling.
The only other place we could get to that wasn't locked or lead to certain death was the west hallway. The hallway was bathed in darkness, each step Leon took echoed through the halls while mine were silent, keeping an ear out for any noises.
Up head was the faint crackling sound of a radio could be heard. In the corner was a dead cop, the radio clipped onto his vest. It sounded like someone was talking but I couldn't make out what they were saying. Leon went over to examine the body, lifting the man's head his mouth hung open. It seemed like something had sliced his mouth all the way up to his ear so deep it exposed his skull.
A small sick part of me thought it looked kind of cool.
"Oh. Oh, what the fuck?" Leon muttered moving the cops head around. "Stop moving his head like that, it's disgusting" I scolded my face twisting in disgust from the sound it made.
The sound of a soda can rattling around on the floor came from around the corner. Our heads shot towards the noise. "What was that?" I asked. The hairs on the back of my neck began to raise as I slowly stepping towards the noise, my knife raised high waiting for anything to attack. A part of the ceiling caved in and a something fell in front of me, a light blinded me. Out of fear I jolted backwards my arms coming up to shield my face from the bright light. I bumped into Leon whos hands came to grip my shoulders just as surprised as I was. Tilting my head to the side so i could see, I found a dead cop hanging from the ceiling. A pipe lodged into his neck, keeping him suspended in the air.
"Wasn't expecting that" I said letting out a little laugh, raking a hand through my hair as I tried to relax my beating heart. "This place gives me the creeps" Leon admitted, letting go of me with a huff of annoyance.
The dead cops flashlight was the source of the blinding light. "Well he doesn't need it anymore" I muttered trying to take it from him. His stiff fingers made it hard to get ahold of the light but with Leon's help I managed to free it.
Now that I had my own light, I felt a little more courageous. When we walked past the hanging cop it fell making Leon let out a little yelp, grabbing onto my arm. I tried covering up my laugh as a cough but he wasn't fooled.
"Not funny" he mumbled clearly embarrassed. "Sorry" I said still laughing, hiding my smile by tucking my chin into my hoodie. We continued down the long hallway in silence, the sound of rain getting was the only sound filling the halls. We came up to a broken window, the wind blew strong making the rain come through the window and flooding the tiled floor. My sneakers now started to squeak with each step I took towards the large red doors.
"Will you be quiet" Leon said in a playful tone. "Your one to talk, you've been stomping around in those boots all night!" I shot back opening the red door and peeking inside.
The room was clear so I opened the door wider, walking in and looking around. On the chalkboard was a map of the station, I quickly took a picture of It with my phone for later use. If I read the map correctly, we were in the Operations room, the only way we could get to the next room was though the door next to the board. I went over to it and saw that is was chained shut. Figures.
"Don't suppose you have bolt cutters in that backpack of yours?" Leon asked knowing the answer. "Sorry fresh out" I said biting my lip trying to think of another way. I checked the desk hoping to find a key to the lock but found a report instead.

September 25th
We're turning the station into a temporary shelter due to the massive sudden outbreak. All police personnel have been instructed to make the safety of the citizens their top priority as we try to accommodate as many of them as possible.
September 25th (addendum)
One of the refugees attacked us in the middle of the night, resulting in the death of 1 officer and injuring 3 others. The person in question was quickly restrained. We believe this was simply a case of someone snapping under intense stress
September 26th
A mob attacked the station today, resulting in a number of casualties. A few survivors were able to make it safely behind the emergency shutters, but surrounded as we are, it'll be hard for any of us to escape this place. We're not sure we can fix any of our comm equipment, so we remain cut off from the outside world.
September 29th
There was another clash on the west side of the station around 1pm. Twelve people died, and there is only a handful of survivors left. Everything is falling into disarray in here.
Damn, these poor people got hit really hard. With all these survivors here, I can only imagine how many zombies are lurking around the station. Since the police were taking in survivors, I wondered if there was a chance Jen came here. If she did, i hoped she was able to escape this death trap of a police station.
"Hey, we can climb through that window" Leon said bring me out of my thoughts. I looked up to where he was pointing to see a broken window, it would lead us to the next part of the hallway that was blocked off.  "Seems risky, we don't know what's on the other side" I said as something started to bang on the red doors.
"Looks like we don't have a choice" Leon said climbing on top of the plastic table that was under the window. The zombies we able to break through the door, their moans filling the room.  "C'mon" he yelled holding a hand out to help me up. "You first" he ordered pulling me towards the window. I quickly climbed over the sill and fell to the floor on the other side. Not a second later Leon fell next to me.
A soft thumping sound came from down the hall. Aiming my flash light towards the noise, a zombie was banging its head on the vending machine. Strange, why the hell is it doing that. I took out my knife to kill it but Leon put his hand on the blade lowering it. "I'll do it" he said taking out his own putting the zombie down.
"Which way now?" I asked looking around the halls. "This way" he said leading me towards a door that said weapons room. The room was full of lockers, some open and some still locked. It seemed like we just had to punch in the locker numbers to open them, not a very safe way to keep weapons stored. Anyone could just stroll in and steal them, kind of like what we were doing right now.
I went over to the panel and noticed two of the numbers missing, number two and number three. I pressed down on the empty spaces feeling the rubber button move but it didn't go through on the screen. "That's weird, it should still work" I mumbled to myself spamming my finger down hard on the panel.
"How much you wanna bet that the lockers with the numbers 2 and 3 have what we need?" I asked looking over towards Leon who was exploring further into the room. "Well you're not wrong" "Type in 106 and 109" I did what I was told and heard a click as the locks came free. "Thank you" He said coming back over, reloading his pistol.
"Those lockers had ammo in them. The ones that still have stuff in them are ones that have the missing keys" he explained. "There's also a shotgun! But its locked in a case, need the weapons key card to get to it though" He added looking bummed out about not being able to get the shotgun. "Don't worry, you'll get that shotgun soon." I said giving him a pat on the shoulder before leaving the room since there was nothing left for us to take.
The west office was the next place to explore. The whole room was encased with darkness, even with the flashlight it was hard to see. "Stay close" Leon said as we went deeper into the room. I hummed letting him lead, looking around the room. A low growl came from our left and I aimed my light towards the noise. A cop was heading towards us, his bloody arms outstretched, he was missing the lower half of his jaw, his tongue hanging limp. Gross. Leon shot it in the head twice killing it.
The office held eight desks. Two rows of three, and one desk at the front of the row and one at the back. I neared the one in the front and saw it locked shut, a note resting on top of the desk.
Movement from above caught my attention and I looked up to see and blue banner with yellow writing. 'Welcome Leon' it said and my stomach dropped seeing that. I lowered my light and looked to Leon hoping he didn't see it. His gaze was glued to the banner, grief all over his face.
I bit my lip watching as he lowered his head, guilt flowed through me, if I didn't shine my damn light he would've have seen that. Such an idiot. I made my way over to him and rested a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry" I said not knowing what else to say feeling him shake. "I'm fine" he said sniffing. I could tell he was lying from the way his voice wavered at the end as he trying to keep himself composed. I couldn't begin to imagine what he's feeling right now.
"Let's leave, yeah?" I offered heading towards the door to the lobby and turning the handle, Locked. "Fuck" I muttered kicking the door in anger. I looked back over to Leon who was reading the note left on the locked desk. "This was supposed to be my desk" he whispered his hand gripping the note tightly, crinkling the edges. I went back over to him and gently took the note and reading it quickly.
"Let's get your desk open and leave." I said making my way over to the left side reading out the letters as I go. "NED" I said hearing him unlock the first one. "MRG" He dropped the lock on the floor and slid the desk open. "Extended Mag." He explained attaching it to his pistol. "Let's go"
We headed towards the stairs that rested at the back of the hallway in silence. Leon was still bothered by what he saw and i couldn't blame him. It was his first day and was forced to kill his fellow officers.
he window near the stairs held a zombie who was pounding on It once it saw us, desperate trying to get in. I moved past it quickly not wanting to be nearby if it was able to smash through. The stairs went up about two stories, but we figured we should check the second floor first.
A sign hung next to the only door in the hall reading men's locker room. Leon went in first, a loud hissing noise coming from inside. At first, I thought it was a new type of monster, but it was just steam coming from the busted pipes. "How the hell did that happen?" I asked aloud, not really expecting an answer.
The heavy steam was blocking us off from advancing further inside and I wondered how hot it was. Considering how hot the room, was we wouldn't be able to just run through it. Leon was busy opening the lockers closest to the door so I checked the ones near me.
I opened one of the lockers, a small yelp escaping my mouth as a rotting corpse fell out and leaned on me. I heaved the corpse of me with a grunt shivering in discomfort as my hands made contact with its rotting flesh. It fell to the floor with a thump, unsure if it was really dead I nudge it with the tip of my shoe. It stayed down. "How did he even get in there?" I wondered aloud wiping my hands on my jacket.
"Maybe he was hiding" Leon spoke up. "Yeah, but from what?" I said, Leon only shrugged in response.
"Found this" Leon added holding up a portable safe. "How do you open it?" I ask taking it from him and inspecting it. "Press the buttons in the right order and it should open" he explained. I began toying with the device. The eight little circles lighting up green when i got the order right, but then shutting off when i guessed wrong.
We left the room and continued up to the third floor, Leon leading the way while i played with the device. I looked up as a  large dark shadow scurried past the window outside, and I froze in fear of whatever the hell that just was. Leon froze as well, slowly turning to look at me.
Zombies Im somewhat alright with, these things were slow, but whatever the hell THAT was made me nervous. Leon sensed my uneasiness and took my left hand into his own. "Its outside, I can't get to us" he reassured giving my hand a little squeeze.
Putting on a brave face I let him lead me into another room his hand still holding mine. My stomach did flips as we explored the dusty room, who knew holding his hand could make me so nervous.
Everything in the room was coated in a thick layer of dust that tickled my nose. I let go of his hand to rub my nose with the leave of my hoodie as we came up to a cell like structure. Inside was the goddess statue that was drawn in our book.
Despite all of the dust in the room the medallion shined bright. Two dead bodies laid inside the cage and I wondered what the hell was going in this place. The door to the cell was completely boarded up with wooden planks.
A block of C4 was taped onto the boards, and i crouched down to inspect it. There was no detonator attached to it so we didn't have to worry about it going off with us too close to it.
"Found something that might be useful" Leon called out from behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see him holding a small device. "Let me see, please" i said holding out my hand. "It's a detonator" he explained coming over to where i was. "Oh yeah, this'll help alright" I said taking it from him.
"Any idea how to set it?" I asked flipping the device around in my hands. I found a battery compartment and opened it to see it empty. "Of course" I mumbled, holding my head in my hand in frustration. "This place sucks" Leon grumbled kicking a random object that laid nearby.
"You can say that again" I muttered shrugging off my backpack and storing the device. "New objective, find some batteries" I said standing up from my crouched position.
"Lara, Leon, Its Marvin. Come in" the radio clipped to my pants came to life, its static filling the room. "What's up Marvin?" I asked holding down the button as I spoke. "Comeback to the lobby ASAP. I got something I need to show you" he ordered. I nodded my head even though he couldn't see me. "10-4" I answered putting away the radio turning to Leon who was silently listening to the conversation.
"Lets not keep the Lieutenant waiting" he said. We both grabbed the smooth wood and heaved the bookshelf up. The next room was the top floor of a small library. The pathway to the left was broken leaving us with just the catwalk.
Snarls came from the lower half. Grabbing the wooden railing I look over the edge and saw a zombie dining on a man's intestines. It was almost moaning in pleasure as it ate and I felt bile rise in the back of my throat from the slurping noise.
"Disgusting" I heard Leon mumble next to me. "Let's not go downstairs just yet" I said pushing off the banister and across the walkway to the other door. The wood underneath me creaked as I walked but with the building being so old I thought nothing of it.
Right as I neared the door the floor gave way and fell through. I crashed down, crying out in pain as my ankle twisted. "Lara!" Leon yelled from above as a piece of wood fell onto my head. I gripped my head in pain feeling warm blood trickle down my face. The piece must've reopened my stitches.
The commotion caught the attention of the zombies and they all stopped what they were doing to look at me. I swallowed the lump in my throat as the closet one came towards me. A gunshot rang out and the zombie dropped to the floor like a sack of potatoes.
"Lara, the ladder!" Leon yelled shooting another zombie. I tried to stand up but the pain in my ankle made me fall back down. "Shit, come on power through the pain" I mumbled trying to motivate myself. This time I grabbed onto the bookshelf and pulled myself, using it for support. A zombie came out from between the movable shelves tackling me to the ground.
"Shit!" I yelled out landing on my back as it snapped its jaws in my face. Keeping on hand pinned on its neck I pulled out my knife, sinking it deep into its head. It growled on last time before falling limp.
A dark shadow loomed over me scaring the devil out of me. I realized it was just Leon when the figure removed the dead body off me. I leaned my head back in relief letting out a breathy laugh. "That was a close one"
"Are you okay?" he asked crouching down next to me. "Fine" I said pushing myself up into a sitting position. "Wasn't expecting that, that's all" I admitted looking up into his baby blue eyes. I never realized how gorgeous his eyes were until now.
Realizing I was staring at him for too long I scrambled up completely forgetting about my sprained ankle. I let out a tiny yelp and grabbed for the closet thing for support. Leon. Since he was still crouched I gripped onto his shoulders, his hands resting on my waist and thigh as I attempted to steady myself.
"Sorry"
"It's okay. Can you walk?" he asked coming to stand up keeping a tight hold on my so I wouldn't fall over. "Yeah" I said letting go of him and taking a step forward. My ankle gave again but I managed to stay upright, and pressed forward with a heavy limp.
"Let me help" Leon offered but I brushed him off, not wanting to pester him. "I got it" He ignored me though and looped my arm around his shoulder his hand firmly on my waist so I couldn't pull away. I huffed angrily not resting any of my weight on him. "I said I was good"
"Stop being stubborn, I huffed again grumbling under my breath as he helped me walk. The door on the bottom floor lead us into the lobby where Marvin was sitting down on the bench typing away on the laptop clutching his side. He looked up when he heard our footsteps, his eyes widened at the sight of us.
"What happened?" he asked looking me over. "Fell through the floor, nothing big" I answered waving him off. Leon set me down on the bench across from Marvin.
I propped my leg up on the bench and massaged my sore ankle, hissing slightly from the pain. "What did you want to show us?" I asked looking up at a tired Marvin.
He turned the screen so Leon and I could both see. A girl stood at the metal gate that surrounded the station. Recognizing the red jacket that Claire wore, relief spread through me knowing she was alright.
"Claire" Leon and I said at the same time. "You know her?" Marvin asked looking between the two of us. "Yeah, she came into town with us. We got separated though" I explained taking off my shoe and rolling up my pant leg to see my swollen ankle.
"eep, that's not good" I mumbled poking at my swollen ankle. "You're gonna need to wrap that." Marvin stated looking at my ankle.
"you can get to that courtyard through the second floor, east side." Marvin explained as i put my sneaker back on so we could leave. "Im on it" Leon said. "Thanks, Lieutenant." Leon added heading for the stairs.
"Wait up" I said going to stand. "No, you stay here. Rest that ankle. I'll be back with Claire in no time" Leon said giving me a stern look. We had a silent eye glaring contest till i sighed heavily giving up.
"Fine" I said unclicking the radio and holding it out for him. He took it but i pulled him closer before letting it go. "Becraful, alright?" I asked worried for him.
"Always am" he said as I let go. I watched him run up the stairs clipping the radio to his vest before he disappear into the east side of the station.
"There should be a med kit next to that cot over there" Marvin said pointing towards the cot a few feet away. "Thank you" I said leaving my shoe off and limped over to the cot finding the med kit exactly where he said it would be. I hobbled back over to the bench, my ankle protesting with each step.
I dug around the kit before i found what i was looking for, before shrugging off my bag and sticking the kit inside. "How are you feeling?" I asked Marvin as I took off my green sock and began to wrap up my ankle. "I'm alright, stop worrying about me kiddo." he said giving my a unconvincing smile.
The loud whirl of a helicopter came from outside on the east side, where Leon and Claire were. An explosion went off that violently shook the building. Scared from the twos well being, I shoved my shoe on, biting my lip from the pain it brought me.
"I'll be back" I told Marvin pulling out my knife. "Will you be alright?" i asked turning to look at him.
"Go, I'll be alright. Be careful Lara" he ordered. I nodded my head and quickly limped up the stairs holding onto the railing so i wouldn't fall.
Please be alright Leon, Claire...
