Life For a Life

He always expects the worst,
But he still hopes for the best.
Some days he wonders if he's cursed,
Or if he's caught in some sort of test.

Anything that can possibly go wrong will,
That is simply Murphy's Law.
His healthy artist mother falls ill,
Her sickness rendering her too weak to draw.

Her skin turns gray,
Her fingers now barely bending.
They say there's no way,
We can stop the pretending.

The tubes go in,
It's hard to recognize her face.
All our prayers and hope to win,
May just be her saving Grace.

The doctor suggests that we ought to say goodbye,
In case it happens after hours, in the middle of the night.
We embrace her frail body, she tells us not to cry.
He prays with all his soul that the doctor simply isn't right.

If anyone deserves to live, it's her,
And if he could, he would gladly sacrifice.
He wished that they could find a cure,
But if not, he'd give life for a life.
