Brushing my fingers through my hair, I grinned at Max.
"No, man. Trust me. Georgina totally likes you," Max poked. I shook my head in return.
"You know me, Max. I'm not an ideal guy for rumours. Most of them are lies. And so what if some girl likes me? I'm better off alone," I smiled softly.
Looking at me with blunt blue eyes, Max smiled slyly. "Look at my boy being all mature. Don't tell me you're not happy by the fact that girls are actually finding you cute. Especially because you're hanging out with me."
"Is it? Last time I checked, you came to me first, at the excuse of being my lab partner. Maxine Miller. Begging me for help," I snorted.
Max rolled her eyes. She sighed and said, " I wasn't begging. It was just that you used to actually be good in Chemistry and I wanted to make you my partner. Because you're cute. And you needed company. I did you a favour."
I laughed and shuffled her hair. "You're cute," I grinned.
"Yeah right, kiddo. Chill," she smiled.
The cafeteria of Glenville High was buzzing with people. Most were engrossed with the sloppy food on the tray.
The stuffy area seemed like home, somehow. The different hues of faces blurred softly against one another, smearing into heaven, as Maxine and I talked, my worries disappearing away slowly.
Maxine Miller and I were never supposed to be friends till she forced me to become her lab partner in Chemistry, in order to use me to get fantastic grades.
The short 5'2'' blonde haired girl walked towards me that day, strong and equal steps leading her way. Looking into my eyes and taking off her scarf, she stated blankly, "You. I. Chem partners. Don't even dare to choose someone else," and walked away.
Maxine wasn't even the kind of person I hanged out with. The tomboy had skates for feet and her ego was higher than love. But then we started talking, and as it turned out, she became my homie, and the brother I never had.
"Hey, Max," Leesha popped out of nowhere and flung her arms around Max. Giving a quick peck on her forehead, she sat down between us, and stated, "Georgina likes you."
"Yeah, okay. He doesn't really care, Lee. He's boring," Max grinned, "Talk to me instead, babe."
"Okay, can y'all get a room? People really do not want to see you both making out," I said as a matter-of-factly.
Lee smiled softly and sighed. "All your friends are getting soulmates, when are you planning on getting one and finally deciding to lose your virginity, baby boy?"
A few people looked at Lee, and then at me, and chuckled. Just what I wanted people to know.
"Leesha! Did you really have to let people know that?" I whisper-shouted.
"The truth hurts, Dan." She shrugged. "Where's Nate?"
"I think he's in-... oh damn," I swore midway.
"Uh, you okay?"Max asked, then followed my gaze to the entrance of the cafeteria and shook her head.
The heaven that was already around me with the presence of my two best friends turned into a utopian paradise. Even they started to blur away, and what came into focus was the wild haired girl. Her freckles made her even more beautiful. The big pair of glasses drooped down to her nose, giving a clear visibility to her forest green eyes, reflecting back the nature in an undeniable grace.
Fayne.
I smiled involuntarily, my heart thumping softly but steadily. Max whispered, " Not trying to break your movie-like moment, but you should talk to her."
