I didn't know what to say to her. Seeing her in bed and hooked to these tubes and wires, cuts and blood on her face, it hurts my heart seeing her in so much pain. I wanted to see her first just to know that she's breathing and she's okay.
"Come on, I don't look that bad do I." She says. She still has energy for jokes, that's good.
"Alex, I'm sorry." I say as I sit next to her.
"What are you saying sorry for."
"For turning you away."
"You don't have to apologize for that. You are a good guy and I hurt you so much, I shouldn't have expected you to take me back after taking you for granted." Out of nowhere, I wanted to show her that I still love so I kissed her. I miss her softly on her lips but tender enough for her to feel at least something. I pull away and and she looks at me in shock. "Why did you do that?"
"Alex, I love you. I never stopped loving you."
"What about your girlfriend? You said it was easier with her and she would never lie to you."
"I ended it."
"I don't want to come back cause I almost died."
"Alex please!."
"No I want you to be happy."
"You make me happy. I don't want the easy, I want the complicated and unexpected and crazy mess."
"Is that what you felt when we were together?" Crap. I gotta work on my delivery.
"I'm trying to say is that real love isn't easy and you fight for it. No matter how hard it gets, we always come back to each other. Alex I love you, I've never stopped loving you."
"I love you too. And I would kiss you so hard right now but these painkillers have me stuck in this bed." She starts crying and I wipe her tears away. "I know we both really want this but there's a lot we gotta talk about and work out before we start this again. I still got some stuff to figure out for myself."
"I get it. Take however long you need."
"I want to be with you, I just want to fix whatever's going on with me so I can be a better person."
"You already are."
"You never stop being the nice guy huh?"
"Never could."
"Will you stay with me? At least till my mom gets here."
"Always" I kiss her hand and I see her crack a smile.
"Glad to see you awake." We turn around and see a doctor walk in. "I'm Dr. Lawson. You are seriously lucky to make it out alive."
"You should see my track record. Do I still got a kidney?"
"Yes. You had a lot of internal injuries when you came in. Concussion with blood loss from your scalp. Smoke inhalation, blow to the kidney. We had to run some blood transfusions but we managed to control all the bleeding."
"How long before I can leave?"
"We want to keep you for observation this week but after that, you can go home. Recovery will be three to six weeks."
"Am I able to recover from home?"
"Yes but you'd need someone round the clock to look after you the first two weeks."
"Don't worry. I know my mom will make sure of that."
"We're gonna make sure you endocrine system is fully working and your lungs are completely clear."
"Am I allowed to have people in my room overnight?"
"Only for family."
"He is my family."
