After picking up milk at the store I ran home, taking the longer route this time. As I buzzed through the loud crowd of the city of angels, I tried to imagine how Chris would react to the encounter if I told the truth. I started to tear up just at the thought of him raising his voice at me, so I tried to make up a lie instead. Maybe the lines were too long. Yeah, the store was packed. I couldn't have left in time. Getting to the apartment door I took out my keys to open the door but I dropped my keys and as I went down to pick them up the door slammed open.

"Where were you?" he looked angry, but it quickly turned sad. He was worried about me. I bit my lip as I tried to not think about him worrying about me, because it would be a lot more hurtful than imagining him angry. He ushered me in as if it was cold outside, but the weather is always the same room temperature outside. Chris closed the door, leaning on it after the lock clicked. He ran his face down his face in a frustrated manner. I cowered into myself as I waited for him to tell me off about how unsafe it is outside and how I could have been hurt.

"The lines were too long?" It was more of a question than an answer. He looked through me, boring his dismal eyes through mine for what seemed like an eternity. He eventually lowered his head and shook it softly, taking himself to bed. Once he closed the door I began to weep as I could clearly see him pacing through the apartment with my dead body on his mind. These couple months had us so attached and we cared too much about each other to fight it. I stayed in the living room, silently crying myself to sleep.

I woke up to two strong arms around my shoulders, the person being behind me sleeping. I could have guessed without looking back at him who it was. But as he slowly woke up I pretended to stay asleep. Chris got up from behind me and got dressed quickly. When he was done he grabbed his essentials and turned to me to run a thumb down my cheek. The next thing I heard was the door slamming shut and locking. I fell back asleep with ease.

The sleep was short as after almost thirty minutes, I heard a large thump behind the door. It jolted me awake and had me attentive to the door as it the lock is fumbled with and the door was opened. I had no time to react but by the time I stood up I recognized the intruders as Blaine, Shema, and two others I did not recognize by name but knew they were in the crowd last night. Shema was on her knees and had a kit in her hand with the tools being put back in. Blaine had a bat up his chest crossing behind his neck as his stone-grey eyes scanned the room for me. When he found me he looked down at what I was wearing, which was my underwear and a large tee shirt Chris probably put on me while I was in deep sleep. I blushed and picked up the clothes I had on my floor. He chuckled at my status but moved onto why he was there.

"The elders called an emergency meeting, and you're the subject."

I bit my lip and put on my pants as I contemplated my life decisions. I could feel all eyes on me, but I felt Blaine's burn into my skin like candlewax. I ruffled my hair to fix it before following them out to the hall. The second I step off the mat I feel something hit my head behind me hard, heat rushing to the spot quickly and my sight became red then black.
