Conflict of Culture - Chapter One Scene Three

“Why am I outside?” Fyle impulsively spoke out loud to no one in particular. He was standing in waist high leafy weeds. Trees and other foliage extended out as far as his eyes could see, which wasn’t far given how much nature was obstructing his view. It would’ve been worse if it had been night. If he would’ve known he was going to start out in a forest, he would’ve chosen the elf race. It didn’t cross his mind because it shouldn’t have been possible.

“Display SSW.” Fyle spoke the voice command necessary to bring up the in-game menus. These menus displayed everything from character information, to equipment, contacts, maps, notes, and computer system information. Essentially, the SSW was the backbone of the VRMMORPG. Without it, players wouldn’t be able to tell if they were in the virtual or real world because the virtual world was so realistic. Once open, the PC could either use the tactile holographic interface (THI) or continue using voice commands to navigate them.

After he had a few seconds to gather his thoughts, he was able to calm down and logically assess the situation. I guess I could always be in one of the city parks. I don’t know why I hadn’t considered them as potential starting locations before. No need to panic. But, to be sure.

Okay, maybe it is time to panic. If he recalled correctly, the Forest of Pune was 40 kilometers outside the virtual city of New Subpertino, the place he was supposed to start. At least it’s a low level forest. As far as forests go, it was, having monsters averaging in the level five to ten range. Even so, they way outclassed level 0 PCs. Well, if my starting location got messed up, maybe my level did, too.
