The next day came around quicker than I thought. I dozed off not long after dinner, and slept in until 10:30, when Melissa marched in and slapped me on the head with my other pillow. “Get up!” She shouted. She had woken Alexander too so he snarled at her. He quickly crawled over and laid on me, trying to protect me, which made me snicker. This is why dad kept him in a crate whenever he hurt me, because he did this.
Melissa tried to look like she wasn’t scared but she backed off anyway. “Breakfast is ready.” She said, then left.
I glared at Alexander who looked pleased with himself. He licked my face and panted happily. Sighing, I moved him aside then stood up. I put fresh food into his bowl and water from the bathroom, then had a quick shower and got dressed. I sat on the edge of my bed with my phone in hand and saw it was already 1pm. Groaning, I leaned back. Alexander, who had been waiting for me to finish, jumped onto the bed and back on me, making me groan in pain as he was heavy. Of course, he didn’t realize he had hurt me slightly. Even so I pat his head.
Melissa stood in my open doorway. “You ok?”
“Fine. Just worried.”
She smiled. “Are you actually going to go to this date or not?”
“Yeah.” I said, embarrassed when she giggled. “Melissa, be-“
“Quiet, yeah yeah, I know. I get the picture.” She walked in and looked around my room so I sat up and Alexander fell into my lap, which we both laughed at. He nipped my hand to prove he didn’t like it, but then I pat his head again and he calmed down. “What’re you going to wear?”
“It doesn’t matter.” I said.
She scoffed. “Alright, suit yourself.”
I roll my eyes and get up, walking around to the side of the bed and plugged my phone into its usb to charge. “Did you need something?”
“Nah, just wondering how you were.” She walked out without saying anything else.
Alexander looked at his leash hopefully, which I shook my head at because I didn’t want to take him out and then have to shower again when we got back from a walk. Besides, then he’d get two. His ears pinned down to his head, trying to get around me. I didn’t let him tempt me and walked into the living room. Melissa was on her orange-crystal studded laptop, of course. I sat beside her and she threw the remote to the TV at my face. I sigh. “Why’re you mad at me?”
“I’m not.” She said, playing a video game for the first time in forever, seeming focused.
I rose a brow but didn’t ask her anymore questions in case she was gettingmad and turned on the TV and Netflix, watching a random horror show. Melissa eyes sometimes skidded off her laptop screen to watch the show too.
An hour and a half before Aphmau was due to finish work, I got up and walked back to my room. “Alexander.” I shake his fur, finding him asleep. He cutely put his paw over his eye, whimpering. “Walk.”
He suddenly jumped out of bed and sat beside me politely, tail wagging fast. He gave me puppy eyes to show me he wouldn’t put up any fight anymore. I took a treat out of the box and gave it to him, then grabbed the leash and collar, putting it on him. He finished the treat and then let me lead him out after I put my phone in my pocket. “Do you have a key and money?” Melissa asked.
“Yes.” I roll my eyes, opening the door.
“Phone?”
“Yes!” I said, about to close the door.
She bit her lip, unsure about me leaving. “I’m going to call you in an hour and you better answer, ok?”
“Okay, okay.” I rolled my eyes and shut the door. I then started the long trek to the restaurant. I had to stop a couple of times whenever I saw a dog bowl outside of a store and let Alexander drink, but it didn’t really effect the duration of the time we were walking by much.
When I was ten minutes away, Melissa called me. I picked up and decided to talk while walking. “Yes?”
“Just checking to see if you’re alive.” She said, then hung up immediately. Shaking my head a little, I smiled anyway and kept walking, putting my phone back in my pocket.
Looking down at Alexander, I noticed he was limping. “Only a little longer.” I said, and he looked up at me, whimpering and tired.
When we got there I was five minutes early. I sat in the parking lot like we said on a bench. He quickly jumped up and sat beside me, then laid down and put his head on my lap. I stroked his fur, going on my phone will I was waiting. Soon my phone was taken out of my hands. I quickly looked up, but then saw Aphmau, smirking mischievously. “You’re too concentrated on this box.” She teased, looking at the screen. It was just a game so I wasn’t bothered.
“Yeah yeah.” I rolled my eyes playfully, turning it off when she gave it back and put it into my hoodie pocket.
She crouched down beside Alexander. “Can I stroke him?”
“Mhm.” I said nervously.
She glanced at me, looking for the real answer. Since I smiled reassuringly, she then started stroking his fur and gasped. “He’s so fluffy!”
He woke up and suddenly jolted up. Aphmau took a step back in shock, eye lids open as far as they could go. “Woah! Lively.”
As he leaned forward to sniff her, she held out her hand, understanding. After maybe five seconds, he licked her hand, a sign of trust. She breathed out, clearly scared he’d hurt her, and started petting him again. “What breed is he?”
“Samoyed.” I said, biting my nail. “Sorry if he scares you sometimes. He has bad people skills, like me.”
She just smiled. “It’s okay as long as he doesn’t hurt me.”
“He won’t.” I said.
He jumped down from the bench and started walking around her legs. I held onto the leash, making sure he couldn’t trap her with it. She smiled and kept petting him. “He’s so adorable!”
“Yep.”
“How old is he?” She asked, crouching down. He didn’t have to even look up to lick her face since she was already so short.
I thought in my head. “Seven.”
“Ah.” She sat on the ground, not caring if she got dirty. “Doesn’t look like it. He’s so precious!” She said, scratching behind his ears. He’d always liked it so he moved closer to her. His tail wagged far faster than before.
Nodding, I stood up. She did too and smiled up at me. “Anywhere in particular that you want to go?”
“Not really…” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “I-I’ve never really been around here before apart from going to the restaurant and around a small part of town…” I admit.
Her head cocked to the side. “Why not?”
“That’s personal.”
All of a sudden her face went pink. “Oh! Sorry. I don’t want to pry, I won’t ask again.”
I stared at her, surprised how she suddenly became so conscious. Like her, I didn’t want to pry, so I didn’t ask if she was okay. “You can choose, I’m fine with whatever.”
“Really..?”
“Mhm.”
She started thinking. Shoving my hands into my pockets, I smiled to show I didn’t mind waiting for her to choose. Alexander kept bouncing around her so she pet him. “Uh… I’m not really sure. We could wander around town if you’re okay with that. We’d find something to do eventually.”
“Okay.” I said, pulling Alexander away when he started sniffing her legs suggestively.
