“Ready to go?” Melissa suddenly asked, putting a hand on my shoulder. I jumped a little since I was so focused on the phone and she giggled at it. I nodded weakly and got up, handing the phone back to her.
She tucked it in her pocket and got up too, saying goodbye to the manager and then we trailed back to dad’s office. We opened the door and Alexander quickly ran out. “Must have been waiting by the door.” Melissa said as I grabbed his leash.
“Mhm.” I smiled at it and ruffled his fur. “Love you, buddy.” I said, and so he barked. I never trained him to do it, he learnt on his own.
“Do you want to get KFC for dinner?” Melissa asked and started walking towards the entry/exit doors.
“Sure.” I responded, trailing after her.
She smiled a little. “Is it crazy that I just realized we’re orphans?”
“Yes.” I said. “I realized the second I found out.”
She shook her head at her own embarrassment. “I’m an idiot… I guess that means I have parental custody of you now~”
“I’m twenty, I’m past that age now.” I said.
“Fine, I’ll just kick you out of the apartment then.” She said, suddenly going back to her business woman voice. Her face went blank and her mouth didn’t even twitch.
I was so convinced that she was serious that I stopped walking and watched as she kept going. When she got to the door she turned to me and started laughing. “You’re so gullible, I was kidding.”
“Well it isn’t funny.” I said, walking over very slowly.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. If you don’t hurry up though I will leave you here.”
So I ran after her because I knew this time she meant it. She had done it before when I was seventeen and I went with her to dad’s office on his day off. I was collected a couple of hours later by dad and he hit me for it multiple times, despite me doing nothing wrong. She stared running towards the car too so I went faster. I caught up to her and she giggled. “What’s so funny?” I asked.
“You.” She smiled. “Promise me one thing, okay?”
“What?”
She inhaled deeply and put her hand on the driver’s door handle, but didn’t open it. “You’re not going to let yours and Aphmau’s relationship get in the way of us.”
“As long as you promise you’ll never kick me out or leave me in the dust again.” I said, being half sarcastic.
“Promise.” She giggled more.
“Any more requests?”
She smiled. “You won’t go to that damn alley - the one that the letter mentioned; that if you ever have a kid you’ll name it Derek or Rachel; and that if you turn out to be the one who inherits dad’s life savings that you’ll give me half.”
I took the first ones seriously but snickered at the last one. “I promise.”
She smiled at me. “Good.”
