Prologue

Jungkook's POV:

"Jungkook, take care of Lily while you are out with her," Appa said to me.

"You know how special she is to the pack," Eomma continued. "She can do things that no other pack member has ever been able to do. Lily will help you be a strong pack leader one day, Jungkook."

Eomma looked at both Lily and I lovingly, though Lily wasn't really paying attention to either of them. She didn't really like constantly being reminded of how she was different from everyone else in the pack. I felt bad for her. It was hard enough being the child of the pack leader. We had enough pressure on us just for that. But Lily's abilities that made her different put so much more pressure on her.

"I will always do everything in my power to protect Lily," I said to our parents, putting my hand on her shoulder, smiling down at her, making her smile at me.

We finally got out of the house. I changed form into a wolf. My wolf form was a large black wolf. I knelt down and let Lily get on my back. Once she was on and I could feel her holding on to me securely, I took off. When we got down by the lake, I let Lily off my back before changing back to my human form.

"Thanks, Kookie," Lily said, sitting next to the water.

I could tell she felt weird that I had to let her ride on my back when we came to the lake. Nobody knew why, but Lily hadn't had her first change yet. It was yet another thing that made her different from the rest of the pack. I went and sat down next to her, pulling her closer to me.

"Any time, Lily," I said to her. "I love you."

Lily sighed.

"Don't you think it's weird though? That I'm the only wolf my age who hasn't had their first change and you still need to carry me around like that? Or that I have these abilities?" she asked as she pulled loose wood into a pile and set them on fire without getting near them. "Why am I the only one like this, Jungkook?"

I lifted her chin so that she was looking right into my eyes. She was sad and frustrated. As her big brother I wanted to protect her from everything, but I couldn't protect her from what was going on within her own body.

"I'm not going to lie to you, Lily," I started. "Every elder and other member of the pack says you're this different because you're meant for great things. And I'm not saying you're not. But I don't know why you're different. All I know is that I love you with all my heart. You are my baby sister and always will be. I will always do everything I can to protect you, no matter what. Just know that whatever these powers you have are, they don't make you any less of a wolf, okay? I'm sure that you'll make your first change and start to feel less like an outsider in the pack. It's like you hitting puberty. It's just gonna happen one day, Sis."

"Not if we have anything to do with it," a voice behind me said and my back stiffened.

"Lily, put a barrier around you. Now," I told her. "Those are vampires."

Lily nodded as I stood up and turned to the direction of the voice.

"Do you really think that you can take us alone?" one of the others asked.

I wasn't sure, but Lily had our things. I hoped she would call for help. For the time being, those blood suckers wouldn't be able to touch her.

"Let's find out," I said, turning to Lily and whispering to her, "my phone."

I knew she'd hear me. She did have a wolf's heightened senses. Lily nodded and the vampires started to approach me.
