Lewis
I can still see it all. The blue zig-zag of the seats on the train, him sitting there so blissfully unaware with his earphones in as he flicks through pages of his book. Sometimes I can feel the rumble of the train speeding along the tracks, hear the announcement to Bridgehaven, picture Brett leaving through the open doors.
I have a lot of time to think now. I think about what would have happened if I'd never followed him or what would have happened if he'd never met Seth. It always leads to me picturing us together again.
There's a knock on the door, drawing my attention away from the solid white of the ceiling.
"It's visiting hours," the nurse says in a voice too honey sweet, "a man called Seth has come to see you."
"No."
Seth this, Seth that. Seth who I've known since I was three. Seth who stabbed me. Seth who got me stuck in here all those months ago. Seth who stole the love of my life.
"He says you're old friends."
He's lying. We're not friends. We're enemies.
"He says he has some exciting news. You should talk to him, Lewis. It might help if you talk to someone."
"No."
I roll over in my bed, white sheets, white pyjamas, white room, white everything.
Traitors don't get last words and they don't get to speak to those they've betrayed. I close my eyes and imagine myself back on the rumbling train, admiring Brett in such close proximity. I think to that night at the club, my boy was so drunk he didn't know what he was doing. I picture him in my house, looking so vulnerable sitting on that bed. Fucking gorgeous.
"He thought you'd want to know that he's getting married."
My eyes flit open in an instant.
Fucking bastard!
