Jeremiah

I woke up, a siren noise piercing through my head. I looked up at the ceiling, but it wasn't a normal ceiling. I shot up, looking around frantically.

"Where's Adi? Where is she? Is she alright?" All that I thought of was her. I glanced to my right and saw that she was hooked onto a machine.

"Sir, we need you to remain calm. Your parents have been notified, as well as hers. We are almost at the hospital." The noise became overwhelming. Red blocked my vision, followed by darkness. I couldn't see, but I could hear everything. I heard the back doors of the ambulance open. I heard them roll something out of the ambulance. I got lifted to another surface and felt myself being lifted again. I grunted in pain.

Before I knew it, I was in an x-ray room. Everything was really a blur. I remembered getting x-rayed. I also remembered getting my head checked out. My concussion essentially resurfaced. I had three broken and fractured ribs, which hurt like hell. My arm injury from December also resurfaced, but it was only a sprain this time around. To say the least, I wasn't the best, but I could've been worse.

As soon as they released me, I ventured to find Ada. I went to the lobby and sat down, waiting impatiently. I went up to the front desk. "Can I please see her now?"

"I'm sorry sir, but visiting is strictly for direct family at the moment." I balled up my fist. "Now, you can wait in the lobby until special permissions are given for you to enter. I would suggest you to head home because it might be a while till she can receive visitors that aren't strictly family."

I scowled in anger before sitting back down. I contemplated going home. I looked at the exit as I saw my parents coming in; I stood up. My parents rushed over and hugged me. I winced when they squeezed me.

"Mom, mom. I have some broken ribs," I said breathlessly. She grabbed onto my shoulder that didn't have the sling.

"Then why are you standing, honey?"

"You can stand with broken and fractured ribs. I'm gonna go try and see Ada again." The person at the desk gestured me to be able to leave. I nibbled on my bottom lip nervously.

"You can see her now. Her father and mother gave you permission to see her." I sighed out in relief. She gave me the room number, so I walked as quickly to her as possible. In there stood and sat Cameron, Mrs.Smiht, and her dad. Ada was laying silently on the hospital bed. I covered my mouth in shock and leaned back on the wall. My whole body felt numb. This was all my fault. My hair fell over my watering eyes.

I didn't even want to walk near her with how fragile she looked. I didn't wanna hurt her anymore than I already had. I slowly walked over, hands trembling and head hanging low. Her mom adjusted her attention to me.

"Hi, Jeremiah." Mrs.Smiht smiled slightly before her expression faltered back to a frown. "How do I say this?" We both stayed silent for a short while. "Ada... she. They think that she is paralyzed. From the hip down. They..." tears started falling down her face, "aren't sure if she'll walk again. It's hard to tell... right now. Once she is woken up from her coma, we will know for sure. The other driver got the worse part of it. He is completely comatose and they aren't sure if he will wake up at all. They are considering whether to cut off life support, but of course that is for the parents to decide."

I rushed over to the side of her bed. Her mom rested a hand on my back. "We'll let you be alone with her for a while," she smiled again, but I could tell that it was fake. I nodded in response. It was still very heartwarming to me for her to have kept a smile although her daughter was in such a terrible state.
