A/N: I am so sorry if any information about rehabilitation facilities are inaccurate. This is just based on research and images and I am in no way trying to offend or make fun of people with disabilities. Please politely correct me if I am incorrect in any way in the comments. Anyway, thanks for 1250 views, everyone(this actually increased since I started to write this part)! The support is appreciated!
I got wheelchaired into the rehabilitation facility. It had been a week since I had awoken from my mini coma. I was released from the hospital and I was given the medical advisory to get to a rehabilitation center. They had guessed that my major recovery would take five to nine months based on the amount of feeling I still had and based on my athletic background. Maybe God was working some miracles. My mom rolled me into the facility and went to the front desk. We filled in some papers before being escorted to a hospital-style room, except it was a little bit neater and simple.
My mom helped me get lifted onto the bed and took off my shoes. "So you can wiggle your toes?" I nodded yes, not wanting to fully acknowledge that my body was half-paralyzed. I wasn't able to fully-fledged out move them like crazy, but I could barely 'wiggle' them. Moving them slightly counted as a 'wiggle.' "Well, they have you set to stay here for four weeks to monitor your improvement here and so that you can adjust your everyday life with a wheelchair," my mother continued, giving me a tight hug. She held onto my hands and looked me in the eye. "Now, I would love to stay longer, but I have a shift at the hospital that I can't take off. Since I already took off a week and a half, I can't miss more work." She caressed my cheek before kissing the top of my head.
"Thanks, mom. You've done plenty," I said as I gave her a small smile.
"You're sure that you'll be fine, Adelaide?" My mom looked me in the eyes with sincerity.
"Positive." I give her a tight hug before she left. After her departure, I looked down at my toes intently. I directed all of my attention toward my toes. I focused in on trying to wiggle my toes. I bit my bottom lip in an attempt to stay still as I tried to move my toes. It was like trying to raise an eyebrow that you were never able to raise. Sweat began to form onto my forehead. This time around I managed to move my big toes downward. That was the only thing I was able to do before beginning to tremble from the exertion.
I stared down at my legs before tears fledged from my eyes. I pressed my palms onto my eyelids firmly in a feeble effort to halt my crying.
News flash: it failed.
I reached for my phone which was on the edge of the bed. When I pressed a hand against the bedsheets to steady myself, the phone slipped off the plain sheets. I mumbled unfriendly words under my breath. I leaned against the edge of the bed where gravity decided to work against me. I fell onto the linoleum floors that were made to look like hardwood flooring with a loud thud. There I was, laying on the icy floor. I looked up at the ceiling which was white and plain, just like everything else in this room. That is other than the walls which were a nice beige tone instead because that was totally better.
I threw my phone onto the fitted sheets before sliding my body against the metal bed which was, surprise!.. also covered in fake wood at the head and foot of the bed. I blindly placed my arms onto the bed behind my back in an awkward position. I tried lifting myself up with my upper body strength. I struggled to lift myself, especially since the bed reached up to around two or three feet. That didn't seem like much before with my tall 5'8" stature, but because of the uselessness of my legs, it was deemed a much more difficult task.
Well, I gave up on trying to get onto the bed after countless attempts in a span of ten minutes. I decided to lay flat on the floor while doing random junk on my phone. I looked back to some of my photos from cross country season which felt like so long ago, although it was only a little over a month ago. I watched my finishing video from the county meet where I managed to achieve eleventh place out of approximately one-hundred and fifty girls that were in varsity in the county. This accomplishment was especially stunning since I was only a sophomore in high school. They said that by the time senior year came around, I was going to be the top in the county. Keyword: was.
