I stared at my legs again. I had been doing that a lot recently. It was now mid-February. I had about two and a half weeks left before I could return home. Valentine's day was in a few days. School was canceled for today because of snow. Last night I had gone to bed to the meek and gloomy weather of winter, but when I woke up, snow blanketed the ground about a foot high.
I dreamily looked out at the snow. I really wished I was able to go out there.
"Hey, Ada. I thought I'd make us lunch since we can't go out in the snow. Molly went outside for a little while and made snow cream for us, too," Jackson said, rubbing the jaw of his boyish face. Jackson and I became wheelchair buddies shortly after we met.
"Alright," I responded, sending a cheeky grin in his direction. I rolled out into the hall and headed toward the cafeteria with him. We stopped at a table that the little girl I met, Molly, was sitting at.
"Here's you're snow cream Adi Ladi!" She shoved a bowl in my direction. The little girl never really specified why she was here, but she had some sort of terminal sickness. They suspected that she would live up until around five more years. The age of ten is way too young of an age to die. It was also a bittersweet thing to be called Adi Ladi. Every time she would say it, I instantly felt remorse about Liam. And Jeremiah. And the rest of the family. I couldn't imagine losing someone in that way. A part of me every single day thinks he's gonna wake up that very day. I wanted him to wake up just so we could at least say goodbye.
There wasn't even a sense of closure. He is dead, but still on life support. At least if he was completely dead, we could get closure at a funeral, and we would know that he wasn't coming back. Instead, we were just delivered false hope that he "might" wake up.
"Are you gonna try it?" She looked at me with her wide brown eyes.
"Of course, sweetie," I said kindly in return. I pick up the spoon and shovel some into my mouth.
"This is delicious, Molly. Did you make it by your self?"
She nodded and said "mmhmm." She kept on glancing to Jackson, though. Something was up.
"Alright, Ada. I can tell that you can see through our poor excuse of lying," Jackson said, smiling whilst rolling his eyes.
"It was her idea, but I kind of helped her make it. She still got the snow."
"Well, I thank you both very much for this chilly treat, but I just have to inform you that... how do I say this? Mine is way better." Molly frowned.
"But yours is a very close second." I pinched her pink chubby cheeks, earning me a pout from her. I finished the chilly snack.
"So, what's the plan for today, Jackson? You always seem to make it interesting," I queried, sending a mischevious smile his way.
"Maybe you'll surprise me with a horse-drawn carriage through the city?"
"Don't get your hopes up too high, dreamer," he replied with a smirk.
"I have something much better for you today." My eyes lit up at his comment.
"Ooh, please tell me," I clasped my hands together in a begging position.
"It's a surprise." I pouted my lower lip in disappointment. When my begging didn't work, he continued.
"Be patient, young Padawan. For now, we eat like the Greek gods never could!" I couldn't help but to smile at his oddities. He rolled away before returning with two highly stacked plates of chicken nuggets. "Lunch is served, madame," he stated in a badly executed French accent.
